bluewave
Usually you tend to remember snowfall seasons that have either a 12 inch single snowstorm or seasonal totals of 20 inches or greater. The 20 inch or greater seasons can have memorable 6+ storms for NYC without the really big 1 foot plus snows. I broke down 12 inch snowstorms and 20 inch seasonal snowfalls by ENSO type since 1950. While the La Nina was moderate or strong it made it really difficult to reach this criteria ,but we did squeak out over 20 inches of snow for the season during 1973-1974 and 6 inches of snow on 2/8-2/9,1974.I included years like 56 that picked up decent snows in March as weak La Nina as the March snows fell after the La Nina weakened. 12 inch snowstorms / 20 inch seasons Strong El Nino 2 / 3 Moderate El Nino 1 / 4 Weak El Nino 4 / 5 Strong La Nina 0 / 1 Moderate La Nina 0 / 0 Weak La Nina 3 / 8 Neutral 8 /

bluewave
Meh, seasonal totals of 20 inches dont really do it for me-- I consider them memorable if they were 3 feet or more seasonally. Well,I used the 20 inch seasons for NYC since they included single storms that really made the whole season worthwhile. Although the April 1982 Blizzard came in under 12 inches for NYC,parts of Long Island got around a foot. The surprise 1/22/87 storm was under a foot also for the city, but I measured around 9 inches here and helped put NYC over 20 inches for the season.
