2010-2011 snowfall totals

You can definetely see where the lake effect bands really set up during winter, especially in certain areas within McKean, Warren, and Potter counties. Alot of these totals are elevation dependant. Example would be places like Galeton vs. Wellsboro. Galeton sits at 1345' and Wellsboro 1818' where these observations took place, without a doubt Wellsboro is father from the Lake Erie but elevation adds a few more inches vs Galeton. Eventhough Coudersport 7SE is further from the lake than where I live in Shinglehouse, they picked up 20" of snow more than us. I sit at 1506' and Coudersport 7SE 2150ft. It seems the lake bands set up just a tad to the west of me but clip us more often than not compared to places like Oswayo and Port Alleghany even though they are roughly in the same location as me and Oswayo has a higher elevation of 1710ft, now we are talking about a mere difference of 1/2 to an inch of snowfall difference between each lake effect event but it adds up over the length of the winter. The lake bands seem for some reason to develop where I highlighted in my paint drawing of this map. You can also clearly see the difference between areas like Bradford vs. Kane and Warren vs. Chandler Valley. What is really interesting about these observations is the difference between Coudersport 7SE and Stevenson Dam, they are within 30 miles of each other but had a difference of nearly 70" of snow. Although Stevenson Dam sits in the river valley of Shinnemahoning with an elevation of 820ft compared to 2150ft. I must say being in Coudersport 7SE is in the middle of nowhere in a state park in Cherry Springs which would have no heat island effect from any near by town or city to hinder its snow chances. Eventhough Coudersport 1SE is further south of me, they are outside of the town of Coudersport and remain cooler vs I'm smack dab in the middle of Shinglehouse. Although its a small town of near 2000-2500 people it still produces a noticeable 1-3 degree difference in temperatures vs being out in the middle of the woods. I feel bad for places like Renovo and Stevenson Dam, Winter lovers there must be on suicide watch just knowing they are 25-30 miles away from cashing in 70-80" more of snowfall a year. It would definetely drive me nuts. :snowman: What I truly don't understand is the wide diffence between LaPorte vs Dushore, and Treasure Lake vs Grampian. Congrats to Laurel Summit on the Big winners of winter fun, but is there really the much of a difference between Boswell and Laurel for nearly a 100" difference in such a short distance??

Last night we got two awesome storms. First at 3 a.m., then at 3:50 a.m.

Nonstop thunder and lightning. Somehow we apparently never were placed under a severe wx warning? Bizarre.

This is a great argument for severe warning criteria to be expanded to include extensive lightning. Right now it doesn't.

We were in a huge tournament, from Thursday June 30th- Saturday night July 2nd. We got home Saturday evening about 8. We walked next door to my sisters to cool off in the pool and have a couple frosty beverages. By midnight, i was beat, we went home and went to bed. Sunday i was mowing my lawn and the fire chief ( a good friend of mine) pulled in and said wow, how bout that storm last night? I said what storm. lol. I never heard it. He lives 2 blocks away, he said he thought his house exploded. Here, the Church that sits behind the firehouse, which is about 100 yards from my house, the chimmney got struck by lightning. The church is about 100 years old and has never been hit. This is a high chimmney (brick) 2 sides of brick are gone.My friend who is a mason contractor stopped, he told me he inspected it and its totally destroyed.must be torn down and rebuilt. and i never heard it!

We were also at a huge baseball tournament in southern Delaware from the 1st through the 4th. Just a few drops of rain on Sunday morning, and man, is it ever dry down there. Everything is brown and sprinklers and irrigation systems were going full bore all weekend long.
