The entire period of record for State College. Snowman.gif

Even the sub 20" years are a lot of snow for me! Just wanted to introduce myself...I'm at PSU for meteorology and just moved in yesterday. I'll do more lurking than posting (seems like you guys have some good mets on the forum), but will at least contribute with obs this winter. Seems like a great subforum!

Yeah this is a great forum and definetely one of the nicest! Welcome and enjoy it while you can. By next year your eyes will be green with envy from just watching certain areas get pounded while you either get slop or a nice flizzard :)

With Irene possibly coming up the east coast, It should be interesting to see how much rain is produced from this system. If the ridge builts back in instead of a trough to sweep it away, the ridge could slow the track down for potentially heavy rain.

I've been impressed how consistent the models have been with this storm given how far out it still is. 12z GFS brings it very close and gives us some heavy rain. The key will probably be how strong it is when it makes landfall along the SE or Gulf Coast. The overall pattern favors bringing any storm in that area north with the trough coming down across the northern Plains.

Should be a fun one to watch...

Wow. We are sitting at around 5" for the month so far. We'll see what today brings. The fact that we have full sun down here again is encouraging for storms in the next couple of hours.

I was at 5.61 before it started here. Amazing amounts of rain here since the heat broke, and what sucks is not far west of here, it's not near as wet.

Ya. It was pretty intense even as it was passing over my area, before the warning. Winds were probably gusting in the 40-50mph range during the downpour. I got some of it on video, though the quality isn't that great since it's through my mucky window.

Wow!

I knew it was windy, but had no idea it was THAT windy! That's less than a mile away from me, btw. I'm on Pugh near Easterly.

Hey Mallow when did you move to SC? You working for PSU? Anyways welcome to the central PA forums, it's always nice having all you mets chime in from time to time! I have a question regarding the upcoming storm Irene if your willing to answer. On the GFS it looks like the Bermuda ridge builds back to the west a bit, you think Irene has the potential to take a Hazel esque track instead of the hooking Floyd type track? I know its over 120hrs out but just curious, I noticed that there isn't much of a upper level trough to push this much out to sea but instead Irene looks to sluggishly track up the coast in between the weaknesses of the midwest ridge and Bermuda ridge. If Irene avoids shrederola, you think the warm SSTs off the SE coastline could develop this into a Cat 2-3 storm. Here is a link to the toasty SSTs, there is even some 88°F readings which is quite impressive.

I'm starting grad school here on Monday. ^_^

As for Irene... it's obviously a long way out, but my best guess is here:

http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php/topic/24008-tropical-storm-irene-part-two/page__view__findpost__p__896548

If a track like that were to verify, there could be some flooding issues in parts of Central PA. Something to watch out for, to be sure.

Same here! What courses are you taking? Were you at the grad student BBQ/party on Friday?

Anyway, I saw the wind today but had no idea it actually caused damage! What a way to start a new school year!

I was. Were you? I'm the one who couldn't stop talking about Oregon. :arrowhead:

I'm taking meteo520, 531, and 597A (as well as 590, 591, and 600). Basically, the required/recommended courses plus tropical meteorology.

Ya, my thoughts exactly!

Nice, I'm taking a few of those. I was there too. Getting quite drunk and playing plenty of pong and card games haha. I'm one of the few PSU undergrads who decided to stay here.

Haha, I was inside by the sink most of the time. I couldn't get too drunk since I had to drive back to my apt. But I did end up playing that dirty version of Apples to Apples (that game is great!).
