Central PA Summer Thread

I managed to muster at least 100ºF when I walked out with the handheld. That was after it was cloudy for a few minutes, so its prolly a lil higher than that when the suns out. I decided to put the thermometer inside my all black vehicle and see what kind of ridiculous number comes out of that.

At any rate I still can't get over the insane readings here in the central counties with a pair of 102's at UNV and AOO and FIG (Clearfield) now at 103. Very intrigued about the dry air as well. State College's dewpoint is at 48 degrees right now making for a RH of 16%. Considering the breeze and how dry stuff is, that probably makes for at the least a heightened threat for brush fires. I can't even imagine what its like for you guys further east with these types of temps and 70+ dewpoints.

DuBois all time record was broken today at 99 - may have reached 100 between hours.

Altoona all-time record of 102 from 1930 was tied and it may have easily reached 103.

Got to 102 at UNV, but we'll have to wait what the official reading is from Penn State. Got to 99 on the Walker Building roof, so I would imagine the high was 101 or 102 on the ground at the official thermometer.

This is one we'll be talking about for a while.

Also, not sure about this Severe Thunderstorm Watch - air is pretty dry across most of west-central PA and CAPEs fall off as well.

Looks like the high was 101 at DuBois and 103 at Altoona. Even Bradford reached 97, tying its hottest reading on record.

It's amazing how hot it was able to get in elevated and fairly rural sites like AOO and UNV. The decrease in the humidity later in the day really helped some climb up temperature wise, but still incredible nonetheless and a testament to the brutality of this heat wave. I think that in all the years I lived up in State College, the hottest it got was perhaps 94-95. Making it to 102 is unbelievable for this region (especially having it occur twice in a row!!), especially in hilly and elevated locales. State College is 1200 feet above sea level and the airport site is in a rural, agricultural area. Certainly nothing like the urban jungles such as PHL, EWR, Central Park and such.

Yea i still can't get over what just happened the last two days with temps. Widespread triple digit temps are usually reserved for the southeastern PA folks with the bad heat waves. And about the urban jungle thing that is something else as well. As Brian had mentioned on the previous page, KAOO busted its record high min by 4 degrees (only getting to 80ºF) last night. Thats from a station in the sticks and at over 1500ft.
