1930-1936 was an absolute HORRIBLE stretch of summers, with 1932 and 1935 a break from the extremes of 90F+ days, though both summers were still warmer than normal.

A little perspective...DTW averages 12 days per year of 90F+. In the 1930s, we averaged 17, our most extreme decade (the most recent decade, the 2000s, averaged just 10 days).

Detroit...90F+ days..100F+ days....hottest temp

1930.......15..........1......100F (July 28)

1931.......27..........1......100F (July 17)

1932.........8..........0........99F (July 19)

1933.......23..........1......100F (June 8)

1934.......33..........1......105F (July 24)* Detroits hottest temp on record

1935.......11..........0........96F (Aug 1)

1936.......22..........9......104F (July 8 & July 14)

In fact, the in the 15-year span of summers of 1930-1944, only ONE had temps below normal (1940) and that was JUST slightly below (and the summer still saw a 99F max temp).

The 2 things that stand out and baffle me as a climo-geek are the heat during the summers of the 1930s and the low-snowfall during the winters of the 1940s. We have never seen a time period come close to matching those oddities.

Great analysis and observation.

I am glad we have missed out on the hot weather. Was suppose to get into the 80's yesterday, but we got a good lake breeze keeping the temperatures in check. Right now inland it is in the 80's and we are only in the 60's here in the Keweenaw. My Persian supervisor was upset it never got hot. Not me. That hot weather can stay away.

A degree higher here this morning at 8AM compared to yesterday at the same time (77º versus 76º). Made it to 94º yesterday...I'll take a stab and call for 96º today. At least it looks like more seasonal warmth for the upcoming weekend here.

82 here at 1am.

Amazing to see MSP hit 103. They're one of the colder and snowier locations in the Midwest, and to post high temps like that after all the snow and cold they get is remarkable.

They sat right under the nose of the jet allowing for compressional warming. I was blown away after hearing that though, that is some big time heat. The construction guys must have been falling over left and right.

if there was less wind we might've broken the record of 100?

If anything, wind is good. It leads to stronger mixing of the airmass. Then it helps that it's coming from the hills off to our west as well, as downsloping heats us up even more.

Note City Airport, which was one of the cooler spots yesterday, is now tied for one of the hottest with the strong west wind.

Today would easily top out in the mid 90s everywhere.

If it can reach 100 at Toledo Express Airport, this would be the earliest official 100+ in the Toledo Area. Yesterday was 97 at the airport... today is running 4 degrees warmer than yesterday was at this point so it should be close.

Highs the last 4 days in the Toledo area.

TOL: 94, 90, 90, 97

TDZ: 97, 91, 93, 99

Nice catch. These seem to be much less common east of the Plains but I've even heard of them occurring on the east coast.

Hmmm could this be a sign of the summer season? interesting note by Skilling, abnormally cold springs tend to produce anywhere from 24-42 days above 90 degrees here. Also does major heat like this so early in June tend to prelude to hotter temps in the heart of summer, in other words is there a connection to this?
