June 2011 general discussion/obs thread

Wow, crazy to see MSP reaching levels not seen since 1988! 1988 was a record breaking drought... this has been one of the wettest years on record for the midwest! This summer is making the soil moisture theory look bunk.

Easy there, its still only the first week of June summer hasn't even "officially" started yet..

96 at Toledo Express and 99 at Toledo Metcalf Field, as of 5 PM. No heat advisories for Lucas County, even though criteria is 100F and both sites are over that threshold for heat index.

You got to admit soil moisture helps. The Memorial day torch was muted thanks to the wet ground. Doesn't take a whole lot of summer though to help dry it out. According to a buddy of mine studying Met down at OSU, the difference say between the early June 08 and early June 11 heat waves was the first was a late spring RNA type heat ridge while this is a bonified pure summer heat wave. Not sure what he meant though, I don't really follow the parts of pieces of what makes summer like I do winter storms. .

Do you think its possible we're extra torchy because the source area (AZ-NM-TX-OK-KS-CO) the torch is coming up from is parched this yr, unlike last yr when the areas were not in drought and the MW was wetter?

High was officially 97 at Toledo today... although Metcalf Field, which usually runs a degree or two warmer, made it to at least 99.

Hottest since June 27, 2005, when it hit 97. 99/100 is possible tomorrow.

I do.

Looks like we've topped out here. 94º for sure, with a 95º or 96º inter-hour always possible.

^^^What they said in response to OHSnow.

Granted soil moisture is not the ONLY variable in forecasting weather patterns.

What a difference outside now that the DP has slowly made its way down from 71 at 11 to 60 now. Earlier there was hardly a wind and now we're gusting to 30.

I don't know how people can make it with no AC in weather like this.. If I was rich I would have u-hauls driving all around the city full of AC'S, fans and little pools handing them out to the needy along with a little cash to help out with the electric bill.

Maxed out at 95 on an intra hour report. Busts the record of 93.

What has been up with DTW always being warmer than DET anymore? Today was also the easiest record to attain in June, so now every day has a record of 94F+. Im off today, so literally spent the entire day inside the AC doing some odds and ends. I stepped out just for a moment to see how bad it felt, and it was sh*t; cant for the life of me see how some people say this is more comfortable than cold, oh well to each their own. Its just funny because this weather seems to keep people inside as much as cold. Winter is longer than summer, but it doesnt make days like this any easier to handle lol. Tomorrows record is 100F, so that certainly should be safe.

Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River, long story short. Today was a really good example. At 12 PM Metro Airport and City Airport were both at 87*F. When the lake breeze developed City Airport fell back to 86*F while Metro Airport continued up to 89*F. This isn't always the case though, City Airport tends to be the big winner in the region if we have a strong W/WNW wind, because of the extra downsloping and the lack of a lake breeze (see this past Saturday for example).

.

There could also be incremental errors with the AWOS at City Airport.

I think the close proximity to Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River would be why KDET has been cooler as of late.

still 102F at MSP, 101F at eden prairie. winds gusting all the way to near 40mph

second warmest june day ever.

The wind is giving a sort of "wind chill" since the heat index is actually lower than the actual temperature. Were it 101 with a 70 degree DP it would have been awful. I have a feeling the 101+ doesn't feel too bad in those conditions.

Ha the summer of 1933 shouldn't even count. That was the heart of the dust bowl and it basically turned the burners on across the whole country

Hot and humid day. Not 96F in Detroit though, officially 95F at DTW (and 92F at DET). Did squeek out heat index of 102F briefly.

1930-1936 was an absolute HORRIBLE stretch of summers, with 1932 and 1935 a break from the extremes of 90F+ days, though both summers were still warmer than normal.

A little perspective...DTW averages 12 days per year of 90F+. In the 1930s, we averaged 17, our most extreme decade (the most recent decade, the 2000s, averaged just 10 days).

Detroit...90F+ days..100F+ days....hottest temp

1930.......15..........1......100F (July 28)

1931.......27..........1......100F (July 17)

1932.........8..........0........99F (July 19)

1933.......23..........1......100F (June 8)

1934.......33..........1......105F (July 24)* Detroits hottest temp on record

1935.......11..........0........96F (Aug 1)

1936.......22..........9......104F (July 8 & July 14)

In fact, the in the 15-year span of summers of 1930-1944, only ONE had temps below normal (1940) and that was JUST slightly below (and the summer still saw a 99F max temp).

The 2 things that stand out and baffle me as a climo-geek are the heat during the summers of the 1930s and the low-snowfall during the winters of the 1940s. We have never seen a time period come close to matching those oddities.
