ORWX
We are in the golf business and hubby is way too excited. It is pouring; first good rain for us in awhile. Heavy lightning and thunder--one kid hiding, dog looking for cover. Not a drop here in Oak Ridge......Soaking Rains 360 degrees around me tonight and South and East of me last night. Swung and missed twice, hoping my time will be over the weekend. My garden sure could use the rain, as does everyone elses. Congrats to those who did get lucky. Psalm 148:8
Just had one of the most amazing science "A-ha" moments ever. Me and my niece just got in right before dark maybe 20 minutes ago. Coming inside I looked east toward Gastonia at a pinkish cumulus developing. We stared at the cloud for 45 seconds, and literally watched it grow before our eyes. I explained how clouds and storms works and then during the 45 sec. span, we watched it grow into a full overshooting top..45 Seconds! We saw the stage where the cumulus hits the freezing level and the ice crystal clouds (the fuzzy anvil) was spreading out around the top. We were lucky on timing, the sun was shining nicely on the top of the cloud, very dark toward the bottom. I told her Gastonia was due east and that in a minute we'll check out the real time radar..sure enough, I put it in motion, nothing at first, then heavy red echoes right over Gastonia. We both were amazed at this, then the lightning was developing within just 2 or 3 minutes after the heavy rain, so we checked the lightning network. It showed lightning everywhere, and then suddenly a bolt landed right beside us. Needless to say, she's scared (I was too) but to just experience that phenomenon of a rapidly developing updraft a few miles away, then the lightning and charging particles from the outflow boundary makes this Science so fun and to see it actually work out.. No rain here yet, but we can hear it down the bottom of the hill. And the winds are picking up . I'm sure the updraft is abot to collapse in the time of this message. Just figured I'd share that, I was so giddy to watch her eyes light up at actual science in the real time. Incidentally, I've only seen this happen a few times or taken the time to really notice it...its worth the time to watch a cumulonimbus develop so rapidly before your eyes. One of my favorite things to do at the beach is watch thunderstorms at nite over the ocean! Saw a red lightning strike last week in Destin ...As long as they are not dropping tornadoes I like watching thunderstoms.
1234snow
Well no rain today either and it is starting to take its toll. The backyard is getting very brown in spots and now there is a fire on the mountain right across the road from my house. It was started by lightning yesterday and is still burning as of right now. Feels like a live in the desert with dry lightning.

AJF0602
I hope that outflow boundary pushes far enough south and develops some rain here in Jacksonville, we need it really bad; on the climate office site it shows since the beggining of May we've had <.75 inches of rain and 0.0 for June lol. WhiteoutWX
Still has not rained a drop here at UNCC, even though Ive literally watched storms go up and die only a few miles away each day. WilkesboroDude
National Weather Service Blacksburg Virginia 418 am EDT Sat Jun 11 2011 Complexity of the situation suggests need to beef up the staffing this afternoon...and potential need to activate Skywarn. At this time do not feel activation will be needed before about 200 PM. Thunderstorm activity likely to persist well into the evening. Storms that fire along Blue Ridge will move east...to be replaced by inbound thunderstorm line/cluster outflows from the Ohio Valley this evening and overnight. The actual cold front will probably not clear the County Warning Area until Sunday...so temperatures/dewpoints to remain elevated through tonight as we will remain on the warm side of the front. Have remained close to guidance for maximum/min temperatures. Think most areas along and east of Blue Ridge to test 90 degrees today and dipping no lower than the 60s tonight. Isopycnic
Neat stuff. this is why I love thunderstoms in NC... This same thing has been happening continuously over east Durham since 5pm with pulse storms and it has been very beautiful. Nothing here yet, in face there is not even any cumulous. Stuff dying out west so I have a bad feeling about getting anything here. Sure has been a very hot dry 2 weeks without even any clouds. Storms got within 2-3 miles from my house last night but nary a drop... Very intense lightning show looking straight up the edge of the shaft though. I love storms... Busick
I ended up with about .2 yesterday, not as much as I first thought. The storms started to weaken once they hit my area. I could see the distant T-storms over the Raleigh-Durham area last night and it was amazing. Not really have had a cell develop over head and dump a lot of rain waiting on Sunday to produce real results.
shaggy
I ended up with only .05 from yesterdays shower. Some places to my north and west showed over 8 inches on dopplar estimates. They are now really beefing up my rain chances for tomorrow as that front slides south. Went from a 20% pop to a 50% pop and it sounds like things may be wet around here for tomorrow with pwats approaching 1.9 inches.
CandymanColumbusGA
I finally got to talk about rain on the radar last night! (I'm the morning dude when all is quiet, except Fridays) We had some awesome storms here! I was amazed at how the storms just kept firing even at 1130 at night. I had never seen this before, the storms firing up at night to such intensity, and thought the outflow boundaries from the earlier storms were impressive! Then I looked harder and noticed the storms kept firing up over the same spots. Some folks picked up near 2 inches of rain yesterday alone! We had a nice thunderstorm in Columbus and Phenix City, but as I drove home to north Columbus the ground was dry just 20 blocks north.... Ahhh to feel like I'm in Florida again with people across the street getting wet, but me staying dry. Some impressive lightning too!

Good stuff robert and I totally agree. I love watching the development of these storms from towering cumulus to actual t-storms. It's one of my favorite things to watch in fact. So we share the enthusiasm on that for sure. I also saw something pretty damn cool last night. It was after midnight when those few isolated storms were forming. There was this one, small, cell located about 30 miles away to the north and I had a totally clear view of the entire storm from top to bottom. And there was some absolutely incredible lightning with it. Not so much the frequency but the fact the lightning was shooting out of the sides of it. One bolt in fact went from the anvil to the ground, completely outside the cell itself. These looked like positive bolts because they looked absolutely huge and despite being so far away they actually looked close, especially the one I just talked about. What's incredible also is this cell lasted no longer than 30 minutes, yet in that little time it produced some absolutely amazing lightning shots. I was wishing I was a photographer last night for sure.

dsaur
Not a drop again. The storms started all around me. It cant go on forever can it? Trust me, it can. I've been in a rain/snow hole here for years now. YOu can see the cells moving toward me, then they see some land mark on the ground, realize they are nearing Tony's house and veer around me. It has been raining all around me for days now. Still no rain for June and most of May, and half of April. I can't count my 321 drops from two days ago because none of them found the bottom of either of my guages I've had tons of thunder though..and I've been telling the trees and plants that thunder will have to do, as water is no where to be found. Now the plants frown at me when I walk around the yard..it is disconcerting! T

My fiance was just laughed at me when I said it would rain today. Perhaps it's closer than she thought lol. btw we only got a very light shower here at the house. The storm that hit yesterday impacted literally the three mile area between work and home with some token drops at each location with ponding on roadways between us. On my three mile drive home from work yesterday there was still water around three hours after the storm hit but literally nothing at work and home. Hoping for an actual downpour today at home lol. Lookout
Looks like storms will start earlier than yesterday. Development starting near Boone, NC back into south-west Virgina. Also watching the Georgia mountains and an area between Atlanta and Athens,GA. Pretty surprising until I looked at the radar. There isn't a cloud in sight here yet there are storms just to the west. I sure hope they help fire off more widespread convection today. The problem is these storms won't move much, if it all..and any "movement" will rely on solely on outflow boundaries. So if you don't get under one, you are pretty much screwed. I will be glad when we get back into a pattern where there is at least some movement to these storms. Here is the 12z ffc sounding and you can see why they won't move. You have light steering flow from significantly different directions from the low levels to the mid levels, which means they pretty much are going to stay in the same spot they develop. It went from nearly clear and sunny to complete cloud cover here in about 20 minutes. Actually quite fast, the storms were east about 30 miles but the cloud deck filled in fast. So fast that I'm actually wondering if a storm is trying to pop right over me or if these are clouds from the storms out east. edit : yep radar shows a storm firing right overhead lol
