Hey - where in ne ga are you? It's been boring wx wise and busy at work so I haven't been on a lot the last week. Welcome

One of those showers was imby. Heavy rain and wind but moved through really fast and just .25 rain

This picture was taken over the Toccoa - Stephens County Library.

I live out in the country on the Banks/Stephens/Habersham line.

the GFS doesn't do much with the tropical system this weekend, but it does develop a big central Canada block, that evolves to a rex block. That feature almost always equals precip for the Southeast. If it's real, really have no idea yet but if it holds it several runs I'd say its legit. Its still far out.

Over the past few weeks the ILM NWS Office has under-forecast the temperatures with such regularity I automatically add a few degrees to whatever they say.

And not only is this heat getting old real fast; the lack of rain is savaging the grass around here - grass which is now mostly brown.

Not the best start to June I've ever seen....

I noticed that when I ventured down last week. Temps through the week were forecasted to be 80-85 degrees. Turns out there wouldn't be a day cooler than 90.

Picked up 1.32" in a severe thunderstorm yesterday afternoon in Glenville, NC. I wasn't at home when it passed through but it was obvious that it came down very quickly. Our paved road looked like a gravel road from all the driveway washouts and had a tree down in one lane of the road. That brings us to a total of 1.62" in the past five weeks.

Here's to hoping we'll get another round today!

Getting some periodic thunder here in Southern Pines. Every few minutes there is a CG in the area but they are few and far between.

I worked all night and havent been paying much attention to the radar lately since it doenst rain here anymore and when I got home I saw those returns and figured the radar was glitching since there isnt much movement but I guess thats all real huh lol. How totally random and odd that is that you have storms this time of the morning......

almost looks like a small circulation between SOP and FAY. Cloud tops are still cooling so its probably hanging around for a while. The models and soundings have a good /better chance of more widespread convection today in the foothills and western SC and GA region. In fact ridging to the west and low level circulation to our southeast + lee trough, looks like a possible slamming of rain and storms in much of central and western Carolinas and Georgia this afternoon. Cross your fingers.

 I sure hope so Robert. This drought is slowly taking hold again around here. Just when we got a few months of relief from the drought in Winter and early Spring, it's well on it's way back.

The low humidity and dewpoints down here are the only things that make this awful heat bareable. While I would like some rain, I can do without the humidity. So....low humidity thunderstorms, please, lol. Lots of water on the ground with low water vapor content in the air :) T

asking for that in June (low humidity+TR) is asking to break the laws of physics LOL, might as well get in your car and keep pressing the pedal until you reach the speed of light  But it looks like coverage is going to be better, maybe getting close to your area as well. And if today doesn't work, ample chances coming up the next 3 days, with increasing low level moisture and less cap.

Area forecast discussion

National Weather Service Blacksburg Virginia

1032 am EDT Thursday Jun 9 2011

Near term /until 8 PM this evening/...

all near term models focus storms on northwest NC and extreme SW Virginia this afternoon...so have increase probability of precipitation to likely in this corridor. Cumulus already popping along outflow boundary across central Kentucky from last nights convection. This boundary may eventually initiate storms in the aforementioned regions. Subtle surface convergence of winds along the mountains may allow storms to fire a little further north than yesterday. Some of the storms could be strong this afternoon.

The grass here has browned out and you can take your foot and brush it over the grass and be left with nothing but dirt in some places. Nice group of surprise showers and storms for the sandhills area. Enjoy the rain while you can!

:lightning:My backyard is a tropical rain forest. I believe all this moisture is drawing out all the frogs at night which is very annoying here.
