Help defining rainfall intensity by geographic region

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm working on a project related to cycling and weather, and I need a little help from some meteorological experts (or knowledgeable amateurs). I'm looking at the effect on cycling of different rainfall intensity levels (light rain: 0-2.5mm/hr; moderate rain: 2.5 - 7.6 mm/hr etc. etc ) and it has become clear to me that the thresholds defining so-called "light rain" vary by region. For instance, if people are used to rain every other day, their perception of "light rain" should differ from that of people who are used to rain once a month. I even found that the American Meteorological Society considers rainfall intensity to be dependent on the geographical region in question, but I have been having trouble finding resources on how intensity is defined for a particular area. Is this an area that has received a lot of research, how light, moderate, and heavy rain is defined by region? Does anyone know of a good resource?

Thanks in advance
