Isotherm
It wasn't too cold when I went in at Pier Village. The air helps a ton. It was actually pretty refreshing. That's what the beach is all about. Yeah I was down in Seaside those 2 days when the high barely cracked 60-61F on the beach (the rainy, windy week). 60 degree air and water in the 50s is no fun. A-L-E-X
Upper 50's and low 60's is actually dangerous for a prolonged period. A man died swimming in the calm waters off Mamaroneck last week. He stayed out too long and the cold water caused shock and made his muscles lock up. He drowned in 6' of water. Caused the beach to be shut down for a little while. I don't know man, I'm sure its fine for 30 min or whatever plus by the time you get out you're going to stay cool for awhile via evaporative cooling lol. I'll link the article of the tragic death tomorrow. I'm on iPhone right now. They explained that with water temps still at a frigid 58-62 degrees, a human's body temp will lower in a few mins and drop to a dangerous levels. The person wouldn't feel it as the water is just warm enough to be able to adapt to it. Freaky death, regardless and very rare.

You probably shouldn't swim for too long with water temps lower than 65-70F without wearing a wet suit, but of course taking a dip is fine. A lot probably depends on your physical condition as some people are able to produce large amounts of heat to be able to sustain themselves in low temperatures. Regardless, hypothermia is a threat with water at 58F if you stay in too long...of course, most people feel cold and don't stay in for long enough to hurt themselves. Sundog
the beach would be nice too-- it's not like we live in Kansas lol. The beaches suck ass in this part of the country. Don't be a b**ch...I went to the beach the week before Memorial Day..it was around 85 degrees and I went in the water. Please. We haven't all been 90 degrees since May 1st...we actually had a pretty normal spring here. What's your pool temp up to? It's probably like a jacuzzi. Analog96
They should just say Southern Upstate NY. We are more like SE Coastal NY lol. True. And Southeastern New York is ambiguous too, because Orange County and Suffolk County are both SE NY and are VERY different.
ag3
With regards to cape cod being warmer. There are eddys that travel up through the gulf stream. Occurs every spring. Some years they are closer and other years further. There is one very close to the cape this year and Tuna all all over it. Fisherman follow these eddys and head there as soon as it's in range. Offshore canyon fishing. So you can't look at any buoy past 20nm for a sst. You have to look at inshore buoys to avoid the gulf stream. There is water that is 75 degrees only 80nm south of LI right now. Friends were on it yesterday and caught a couple white marlin, some mahi mahi and 4 yellowfin tuna to 80 pounds. Excellent point-- do these eddies exist in the winter too or are the water temps more uniform then?
earthlight
Most of the Central Jersey beaches are out of the lower 60's...it's not a big deal.

ag3
Excellent point-- do these eddies exist in the winter too or are the water temps more uniform then? They tend to pop south in the winter and stop 50 miles off of North Carolina. It can be snowing on land in NC and 50 miles offshore it's 85 degrees with a million tuna. It's pretty wild to experience it.

ag3
Most of the Central Jersey beaches are out of the lower 60's...it's not a big deal. There are only 3 weather buoys from Southern Jersey to Sandy Hook that measure sstemps. 2 of them are offline this past week. The only one working right now is Sandy Hook station and as of half hour ago, the temp is 63 degrees. By tonight it will be 59-61. The Atlantic City buoy is 65-67. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=sdhn4

earthlight
Another chilly night coming. Not really too bad...60's in the metro and portions of NJ for lows. Definitely not warm--but I wouldn't call it chilly.
earthlight
Btw the NAM has 82 tomorrow in the city under light northwest winds...85 Tue under west winds...93+ on Wed under west-southwest winds..and the DGEX has 95+ on Thu.
Thunderdude
Not really too bad...60's in the metro and portions of NJ for lows. Definitely not warm--but I wouldn't call it chilly. Tonight it looks to be lower 60's in the city and nearby NJ surburbs but I think LI will be the coolest spot again where last night in Westhampton was near 40 F and tonight won't be quite as chilly where the winds will switch to more West to Northwest oppose to those nasty East winds that dropped the temps down. I say 50's most of LI tonight perhaps near 50 F at the coolest spot if there is less cloud cover. Tomorrow will be much warmer where today stayed in the 60's and where it will be near 80 F for the city and NJ and low to mid 70's for LI. Later in the week it will be quite hot and at least near 90 F in the city and possibly mid 90's in the hot spots in NJ and even well in the 80's near the shore with a West or Southwest winds. Stormlover74
With the best chance for rainfall coming tonight (40%) and most of the week being hot and dry with only a slight chance of storms, I wonder when we'll get our first measurable precip for the month? It could end up as late as June 13th-15th, but I'm hopeful we'll squeeze out at least one storm this week.

Don't by what Upton say check the models but I think the best chance for storms will be Tuesday with a weak cold front with instability lifting taking place and I do think there is at least a slight for Thursday but the severe weather threat will once again be to our north again with trough going there but hopefully timing will be good for at least garden variety in the area. You know I'm at a beach or on water probably more then anyone here. 4-6 times a week. I love the water. For fishing mostly but also some swimming. I was wading in 42 degree water in March catching striped bass while you were still looking at models for snow. Waders and 40 degree water. Frigid!!! But whatever.
