Yeah... I should have looked at first.

1953 had 5, possibly 6 (Worcester one is debatable, prob F4)

Are we already at 3 this year, possibly 4 with the Joplin one?

Yep, three as of 4/27. Smithville, Hackleburg, and Philadelphia MS rural areas. The most (E)F5 tornadoes in one day, outside of the 1974 Super Outbreak.

How about most tornado deaths in a year? We gotta be right up there already...

We're extremely high.... I think we're already at #8 for that list.... but considering we've had a single tornado kill over 700 people before, we have a ways to go to make it to the top of that list.

NWS: Joplin storm an EF4 with winds up to 198 mph

Associated Press

The Associated Press

The National Weather Service says a tornado that swept through Joplin, Mo., and killed at least 116 people packed winds up to 198 mph.The weather service's director, Jack Hayes, says the storm was given a preliminary label as an EF4 - the second-highest rating given to twisters. The rating is assigned to storms based on the damage they cause.

Hayes said the storm had winds of 190 to 198 miles per hour. At times, the storm was three-quarters of a mile wide.

He says survey teams from the National Weather Service are on the scene and will make a final determination on the rating Tuesday.

A tornado outbreak last month killed more than 300 people across the South. At least three of those storms were rated EF5.

Actually passed the damage path of the Jasper County tornado on my way to work today. A lot of people outside the Farm Bureau were looking at the damage. Couldn't discern if it was employees or a survey team. The damage was VERY localized, though. Here we just had some pretty gusty winds that knocked out power for about 1.5 hours.

Regardless of how long the track is... the 116 fatalities have been confirmed by government officials in a live press conference.

I know that. I just meant hopefully it wouldn't go up higher because it affected a smaller area than a track that was 50 miles long.

I created an animted GIF file of (clockwise: BR, SRV, NROT, SW) the tornado, and placed a red square where you guys are saying MIGHT be his house. I sure hope not after looking at this loop :( Hope he is ok.

Gut-wrenching because the debris ball became very visible right as it went over his supposed location
