HoarfrostHubb
I wonder what the record year for F=5 or EF5 storms was... Superoutbreak? This year has been devastating. Good luck to all of you in the affected areas.

gkrangers
Sounds like obvious borderline EF4/5 based on that initial report. They just need to do deeper analysis to determine if EF5 damage was really done.
a mighty wind
Oh I know it wasn't malicious. I just think that until we hear from JoMo any information like this should be kept private. If his house wasn't destroyed, it was very close to the path. Leave it at that until we hear otherwise.
HoarfrostHubb
If I'm not mistaken... the record is 6 in a day and also year... from the Super Outbreak of 1974. Yeah... I should have looked at first. 1953 had 5, possibly 6 (Worcester one is debatable, prob F4) Are we already at 3 this year, possibly 4 with the Joplin one? April outbreak produced 3 EF5 from what I read
Fred Gossage
Yeah... I should have looked at first. 1953 had 5, possibly 6 (Worcester one is debatable, prob F4) Are we already at 3 this year, possibly 4 with the Joplin one? Yep, three as of 4/27. Smithville, Hackleburg, and Philadelphia MS rural areas. The most (E)F5 tornadoes in one day, outside of the 1974 Super Outbreak.

Fred Gossage
How about most tornado deaths in a year? We gotta be right up there already... We're extremely high.... I think we're already at #8 for that list.... but considering we've had a single tornado kill over 700 people before, we have a ways to go to make it to the top of that list. Hoosier
How about most tornado deaths in a year? We gotta be right up there already... 1925 is the deadliest year with almost 800 deaths. Right now we're closing in on 500 fatalities for 2011.
Indystorm
Don't they have to get a national survey response assessment team there? They may already be on site. I agree that the upper end EF-4 is preliminary at the current time.

NJwinter23
NWS: Joplin storm an EF4 with winds up to 198 mph Associated Press The Associated Press The National Weather Service says a tornado that swept through Joplin, Mo., and killed at least 116 people packed winds up to 198 mph.The weather service's director, Jack Hayes, says the storm was given a preliminary label as an EF4 - the second-highest rating given to twisters. The rating is assigned to storms based on the damage they cause. Hayes said the storm had winds of 190 to 198 miles per hour. At times, the storm was three-quarters of a mile wide. He says survey teams from the National Weather Service are on the scene and will make a final determination on the rating Tuesday. A tornado outbreak last month killed more than 300 people across the South. At least three of those storms were rated EF5. KeenerWx
Tornado confirmed near Polo in Ogle county, and also straight line wind damage near Rockford. Actually passed the damage path of the Jasper County tornado on my way to work today. A lot of people outside the Farm Bureau were looking at the damage. Couldn't discern if it was employees or a survey team. The damage was VERY localized, though. Here we just had some pretty gusty winds that knocked out power for about 1.5 hours. HoarfrostHubb
Unfortunately that's looking pretty unlikely given what tomorrow is shaping up to be. :( Some of the best tornado footage, radar loops, etc ever, but the death and destruction is terrible
MJW155
Regardless of how long the track is... the 116 fatalities have been confirmed by government officials in a live press conference. I know that. I just meant hopefully it wouldn't go up higher because it affected a smaller area than a track that was 50 miles long.

dan11295
With storms all around them right now being out in the open in the damage areas is risky, as that report indicates. With all the trees gone lighting more likely to go all the way to the ground.
