That tornado had better not really been heading SE... there's a huge amount of real-estate between the latitude of Walmart and St John's.

We're talking about from 15th to 32nd Streets.

Map: http://maps.google.c...084543&t=h&z=14 (Wal-Mart is marked by the "A" in the upper right hand corner, St Johns is in the lower left hand corner.)

The High School is in between them and it reported heavy damage.

I fear it probably did, because someone here reported the high school being severely damaged, and it's right in between the Walmart and St Johns.

I heard The Lowes also is reported destroyed that would be just under 1/2 mile south of the walmart latitude wise

also the scanner just said "meet at Lowes or what was Lowes"

according to my "unoffical google measurement it's 4400 feet down rangeline from Walmart to Lowes

The other Walmart might have escaped heavy damage since it looks like the central part of Joplin escaped (from what we saw on radar, at least). Updated map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Lowe's+near+Joplin,+MO&aq=0&sll=37.063807,-94.503193&sspn=0.032875,0.084543&ie=UTF8&hq=Lowe's&hnear=Joplin,+Jasper,+Missouri&ll=37.064972,-94.501905&spn=0.032875,0.084543&t=h&z=14

Yellow marker is Walmart, red marker is Lowe's.

Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly clear that much of the southern half of Joplin has received heavy damage.

According to an interview on weather channel, a nurse reported they had about 3-4 minutes of warning... not a lot of time for a facility that large.

The city itself had plenty of warning. This thing was warned continuously before it was even into MO yet, into SE KS. The tornado didn't drop until about 10-15 miles west of town. And as soon as it dropped, a spotter reported it. So it's not like they didn't have warning. So if there was little to no warning, it definitely isn't on the NWS.

KOAMTV has a map up, damage goes right through the centre of the city

http://www.koamtv.co...s-strike-joplin

"KOAM photographer Crystal Albright was at the scene and said the Burger King "is gone"."

"15th Street WalmartLast Updated by Chris 25 minutes ago

Building seriously damaged. Numerous people trapped in collapse. Crews working to get people out."

Maybe...

Two things though.

1. Location is from 2009

2. Location is a day care

IIRC, one of our western members made that map simply based on cities listed in our profiles. So the exact location is probably meaningless. Sure hope JoMo made it out alright.

Just relaying what the nurse had said. NO way shape or form am I discounting the warning time or issuance of it by the NWS.
