Billabong
Some chaff (small pieces of foil, which are obviously quite reflective to the radar beam) from aircraft showing up across the Chesapeake Bay area this afternoon.... it's the first time I've seen it in this area. According to AKQ, it originated in eastern St. Mary's County, MD around 3pm and has streamed south. The echos from the radar grab are about 4,000 - 5,000 feet AGL. Up to 57 dbz showing up at times. Notice nothing on Satellite (same time as the radar grab). There is an interesting wildfire that has been ongoing in far eastern NC (mainland Dare County) that is showing up quite well. Although the echos are shallow, mostly showing up on the lowest tilt (0.5°), it shows up on precip products as well...
Eskimo Joe
Ironically I am down at Wallops Island, VA at the Goddard Flight Facility for a two days conference. I noticed a dusky grey in the SW sky around sunset, perhaps that was the chaff?
