FoothillsNC
Here's the evolution of last nights deadly Mesoscale Convective Complex as it raked across the Carolinas during the night.Several deaths and massive power outages unfortunately. Notice the "V" shape on radar..which gained momentum like a steam locomotive as it barrelled down the mountains, generating widespread 70 to 80mph winds.Notice the initial development of stationary line of convection in the Yadkin Valley east of the northern mountains, as it awaits the primary line coming from across the crest of the high mountains of TN and NC. Outside of individual supercells, and tropical systems like Hugo, (and extremely rare strong Low level jets or gravity waves..like March 2004 and Jan 2006) usually this is the setup for the highest, most widespread gusts over 70mph possible in the foothills especially, where the mountains usually shelter and protect the lee. In this case, the mountains helped cause a massive gain in momentum and forward propogation.

Marion_NC_WX
If it was about 6 weeks later in time, we would be watching that feature to see if it could hang tough off the coast long enough for tropical/sub-tropical development.

kanc2001
NHC has a sat on it and its listed as an invest now it reminded me of the "inland" tropical storm over Oklahoma a few years back that seemed to strengthen over land
downeastnc
NHC has a sat on it and its listed as an invest now Yeah no idea why though still outflow dominate and linear as hell, the main MLC is turning towards Florida and its pretty sheared. I guess maybe they just wanted to practice tracking something. If it were to slow down or stop then maybe it could grow into something but the entire complex is hauling ass. Blue Ridge
it reminded me of the "inland" tropical storm over Oklahoma a few years back that seemed to strengthen over land TS Erin. That still stands in my mind as one of the freakiest weather events of my lifetime.
