This does not hold for Washington, DC. During 1871-1969 (no data for 1870), precipitation averaged 41.14 inches in DC. However, during 1970-2009, the average was slightly lower, at 40.15 inches. Riptide
Thanks for this, the drying trend in the southeast and Appalachians is the most believable. It's hard to notice a 5-10% increase in annual precipitation.

For example, in 2005, DC featured a record low of 0.11 inches in September. However, the very next month, there was a record high of 9.41 inches in October. Then, in 2006, there was a record low of 0.05 inches in March, followed by a record high of 14.02 inches in June. Also, 2009 saw a record low of 0.35 inches in February, whereas December featured its second highest total, at 6.79 inches. Finally, on the low side, October 2000 was the second driest of any month in DC history at 0.02 inches (October 1963 was the all-time driest, with only a trace falling the entire month), and April 1985 was not only the driest April ever, but the third driest month ever in DC at 0.03 inches. NYC has also seen 8 top ten highest precipitation years vs only 1 top ten lowest since 1970. Interesting how different precipitation has been in NYC and DC during the past four decades. During the 1970s in DC, June 1972 set a record monthly high, but that was eclipsed in June 2006. However, there were no new record monthly lows in the 1970s in DC. The 1980s saw no DC record monthly highs, but two record lows. The 1990s saw neither a record monthly high nor a record monthly low in DC. But, from 2000 forward, things have gotten very interesting in DC, as there have been three record monthly highs and four record monthly lows. So, the net is three record monthly highs and six record monthly lows since 1970 in DC. Regarding top 10 and bottom 10 precipitation years in DC since 1970, four years are in the top 10 and three years are in the bottom ten.

Correction: I was looking at the wrong column. The correct numbers are two years in the top 10 and four years in the bottom ten.
ApacheTrout
What do you suppose explains the Las Vegas region experiencing a large increase in precipitation, while the adjacent California deserts to the west affected no net change?
