Extreme heat, esp. like the week after 7/4/10, is interesting, but can make life miserable unless you have AC

I'm the type of person that likes it cold when I sleep, so I kick it on when I go to bed unless it's cool enough for a fan in the window kind of deal. I think it was only cool enough 2 or 3 times all summer for me to keep the fan in the window.

Is Humarock in Marshfield or Scituate?

We used to go there as kids...

It's actually part of Scituate. The beach is kind of rocky imo, but it's defintely a party area..lol. The beach I usually go to is closer to Duxbury beach in the Green Harbor section of town.

I had to bring the fan out during the humid 60s last week...lol.

For Pete ...there was still some decent stretches of snow on Hunter Mountain's trails several days ago when I hiked 3940' Thomas Cole Mountain. Also some on Windham's Trails.... The last weenie patches in ENY I guess, outside of the Adirondacks. I didn't see any natural snow left on Thomas Cole......

Beautiful here now ..upper 60s and mixed blue and clouds. I did have a brief downpour a couple hours ago.

Well BDL maybe, but I mean Tolland.

Wachusett Mt here still has some weenie snow patches on the slopes. Not for much longer though I don't think.

Nice Rick, still some patches at ski areas here but they're just a painful reminder of what was. The Black flies are thick here now. Dreaded time of year. Glad the cool Spring weather looks to continue unbroken. So glad to be in the 60's day after day with no sign of anything even remotely warm. Hopefully we have a cool Summer.

This afternoon I drove from Stowe down to near your neck of the woods in Delmar, NY. I haven't been home since Christmas and figured Mother's Day was a good enough excuse. Anyway, driving down the Northway I saw several good sized patches on West Mountain near GFL (Andy's neck of the woods). It looked like you could actually patch together a pretty good ski run with only a few grassy breaks on one of the trails.

But wow it is another world down here in the Hudson Valley, and even in the Champlain Valley, from up in Stowe. Green, green, green here in the Banana Valley in the Albany suburbs, while up in Stowe its still pretty much stick season. Amazing how much of a change you can get in a 3 hour drive.

While I'm on the subject, up north it appears as though the "buds" and "green-up" is now reaching up into the 800-1,000ft elevation band. It just hit us in Stowe village this week with some of the lower elevations in town showing green buds, but its very patchy from 800ft and up. Today driving through the Champlain Valley, it was very interesting to see a lot of green and leaves due to the low elevations (100-500ft in general)... however, there are a few higher hills around such as Snake Mountain that goes up over 1,000ft in the middle of the valley, and you could visually see no leaves on the upper couple hundred feet. So green-up is obviously still very elevation dependent.

Horrid warmth ?

Yes, horrid Black fly breeding weather. I'll take cold, sterile January.

It would probably be a bunch of snow squalls where Pete miraculously comes up with 8" and you have 2".

It happens frequently with the squall action. The Central Berkshires catch it when others don't. Glad you've noticed.lol

Green up is happening fast here now. A week ago we still looked more like a winter landscape than summer. Now I'd say that 2/3rds of the wooded areas have a dull light green becoming more dominant as the small leaves have popped. Some trees like the ash have yet to open leaves. Forsythia are still in nice bloom here and daffodils are hanging on, but past peak. Dandelions everywhere and I don't mind them. The lilacs are getting ready ...but not quite yet.

Finally ...the mud is drying up a bit here, but still not pretty. This has been the worst mud season since at least 2005. I cut the elevated part of the lawn a few days ago, but still can't get the cub cadet onto half the ground due to the wetness.

It was more than patches on the Hunter trails four days ago. From the vantage point 10 miles away it looked like the main trails were 75% white yet. Maybe their last weenie patches will survive into Mid May. Windham was more of a patches situation. Hunter shut down for economic reasons this year a good two weeks before they had to. Also Easter was so late that none of them south of Quebec tried to hold on for that weekend.

It looks fine there Wednesday and Thursday with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 65-70F range; as the ULL drifts east and the heat ridge over the Plains starts to advect warmer air towards our region, conditions should improve.

I think the disaster potential of this ULL is being overplayed...models have been way too aggressive with blocking patterns and cut-offs since March....remember when we were all supposed to have a huge snowstorm on 4/1, or when all of this past week was supposed to be in the 40s with rain? I'm thinking the cut-off stays well offshore and only grazes extreme eastern areas of SNE like Cape Cod...the strong May sun may be able to bust through the clouds in many areas, especially from the CT River Valley west where the system is looking like no big deal.

I get a "low 70's" forecast for Thursday. It owuld be nice to get soem showers in the mix to keep things fresh.

Meanwhile, black bug infestation FTL.

48.4/40

Nasty biting little gnats, die. The air was thick with them yesterday. Forced to set up the screen porch as a safe haven from their constant attacks. A cool May and June will prolong them but I'll take it over 80 degree weather.

I believe it, I skied Hunter early in the season and they were pumping the snow out by the feet with their impressive snowmaking capabilities. Killington used to keep the Superstar Quad and Superstar open well into May every year but that fun tradition seems to have been a victim of the beancounters' knives.

Do they last until June? I thought they were done by then. Looking forward to having our deck put in (we actually haven't received the estimate yet, but I think we're doing it). For the time being it won't have a screened area, though it might in the future.

Sometimes well into June. A screen porch is a wonderful thing to have as it adds a room to the house in the warm months. We eat out on ours most nights in the Summer. Make sure the builder knows tht you mat want to have a phase 2 that adds a roof/screening to the deck in the future. This way he'll size the concrete piers and framing members accordingly. If you hve any questions about his proposal shoot me a PM.
