Its more jaw dropping to think NYC metro was in the upper 40s and low 50s during a May day. That's what he ment, not some temp recorded before a cold front at 2am. As someone else said, this is the first spring in awhile I recall a nice, slow transition from winter to summer. We've had many days with highs in the 60s this spring; often times it's 40/50s then right to the high 70s/80s, and we skip that comfortable 55-70 degree range.
