4/27-4/28 Tornado Outbreak Damage Assessment Thread

Recommended Posts

Its like none of you guys try to compare ratings and everything else. Your all just as much weenies as I am. You guys act you know just as much as anyone. It seems like all you guys are just as capable of rating a tornado just as much as NWS offices by the sounds of it. Also dont call me a weenie because I love the F-scale and EF-scale as much as anybody on this planet. You guys seem to get off on the rating system just as much as I do for you guys are posting things from surverys from NWS offices. Also I dont keep a chart of EF3-EF5 tornadoes under my user name either.

This might sound funny coming from someone that worked on V2 both years, but I'm not all that optimistic that V2 or even a V3 would change anything that went on here all that much. Let's say we know exactly how tornadoes form. Ok, what's changed really? Maybe an extra few minutes lead time on warnings (but probably not since the main observing tool only samples a location every 300 sec)? I don't think warning time was the problem here.

Even if you know everything there is to know about tornadoes, they're still chaotic and they still are being affected by small spatial and temporal scale changes in the environment that aren't going to be observed, even if you had a national mesonet.

Everyone wants answers when something like this happens, which I totally get, but there's no easy answers here and very little guarantee that this won't happen again in the future.

When do we get to the point where we can predict where tornadoes will hit exactly or to the point where we can disrupt a tornado's vortex thus the tornado never really forms?

No I am just saying if I was I would be very conservative before giving a tornado an EF5 rating.

Let me get this straight, you've been whining for weeks now, that you can't understand why some tornadoes weren't rated higher then they were, sitting at your computer desk. Now you want them to be conservative? :lmao:

Re: Hackelburg.. BMX still says "EF3 or potentially higher" but their updated PNS indicates tornadic winds of at least 180 mph, or a mid/high-end EF4. Sounds like this is a good EF5 candidate in the coming days.

When do we get to the point where we can predict where tornadoes will hit exactly or to the point where we can disrupt a tornado's vortex thus the tornado never really forms?

I'm not even sure that's possible or will ever be. The amount of force to counteract a tornado's vortex is enormous, and not only that that same amount of force would have to be applied throughout the rotating column which would extend very high in the atmosphere. That's just on the mesoscale level too and would only stop one storm. In order to prevent a tornado outbreak you'd have to try doing this on the synoptic scale level, which is even more difficult if not impossible. Not to mention the costs involved with it and logistics of getting into the exact right place.

As far as getting to the point where we can predict where tornadoes will hit exactly. A lot of warnings are already issued before tornadoes even touch down.

Nor should we try. I dislike this need that people have to play God, this assumption that we should completely control everything-- even natural processes-- happening around us.

This is the Earth, and these are its processes for regulating itself. If you don't like it, don't live on Earth.

Are you saying that a tornado with 200+ mph hour winds is a way of the earth regulating itself?
