since 1941 NYC has seen 88 degrees a few times...One as late as the 19th in 1979 after the earliest snowfall on record...The most 80 degree days in October is eight set in 1954...

1954...8

1963...7

1946...6

1990...6

1931...5

1949...5

1961...5

1968...5

1995...5

2007...5

Yeah 2007 was very warm - green leaves until early November.

Looks like the 90s are in the coffin. I'm finishing with 16 days here, basically normal.

here in the northern mid atlantic - IMO we will be well north of the heat ridge which will only poke into our area for brief periods from early June through late August - we will also have the "ring of fire" visit us form time to time being north of the high pressure ridge with some decent storms followed by cooler air and then in mid August the tropics start to get active with above normal precip here August through September.

Based on the latest JMA, it is showing below average temperature departures for 60% of the Eastern US for JJA. El Ninos produce wetter conditions (ie September 1982) for a large chuck of the US. Mainly at Southern California through Texas and into the Southeast. At times, there are troughs that swing through the NE and we get strong LPs producing wetter conditions for the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic. So those of you on this topic, beware because if you are planning to go to the beach it won't be good. This Summer could challenge 2009 in terms of temperatures, but the rainfall won't be overbearing like 2009. A weaker Nino this time around will have lesser effects, so a summer like 2009 will be close, but there may be a few more 90s This Summer Vs. 2009. The central theme for this summer is Cool and Dry/Wet and Hot/Dry with Afternoon Thunderstorms (Possibly Severe).

Looks like we will not have any 90 degree days in May this year -

http://wxweb.meteostar.com/sample/sample.shtml?text=kewr

Also if we have a cooler summer we can avoid the increasing chances of electrical blackouts - we almost had a widespread one this past winter

doesn't look like we will reach 90 - this mornings GFS once again keeps temps well below 90 for a couple weeks . First we have to break out of this pattern we are in with troughing in the northeast

you can really see what is going on with this loop

Is this what gave us the year without a summer in 2009?

Time to start tracking the 90 degree days.    Will post a summer thread to track any heat as well.

This year Im going a bit above avg and on par with last year with  1982/2002/2006/1986 the strongest analogs

EWR: 23

NYC: 16

LGA: 20

JFK: 11

Tony, this will be my call for 90F days:

Going with an average of the 1986/1957/2004/1994 90F day analogs.

NYC: 13

LGA: 15

EWR: 19

JFK: 8

Slightly below average season 90F wise. Think we'll see a lot of elevated night time lows again with countless days in the 85-90 degree range.

the analogs on my list are...1951, 1957, 1963, 1976, 1982, 1986, 1991, 2002...the average 90+ days is 19 in KNYC for those years...1991 and 2002 had well above the average and 1991 holds the record for the most in one year...2002 is in the top ten...1951, 1982 and 1986 all had below average 90+ days...1957 was above average also...1963 and 1976 was near average...I think we could see a day close to 100 again especially in Newark...

Why only one cold-phase analog, 1957?

Why only one cold-phase analog, 1957?

It was the only year that really matched up in terms of other global indicators like the PDO and EPO. 1957, 1986, 1994, and 2004 all had fairly robust +PDO signals in conjunction with a negative -EPO pattern that I expect will continue for the summer. Other cold phase oncoming Nino's such as 1965 and 1972 for example, had solidly negative PDO's. Much different SSTA profile in the Pacific as well among other atmospheric factors.

How do things change if this El Niño fails, similar to 1977 (started later) and 1980? Joseph D'Aleo once had a piece on failed Niños turning into fairly robust summers.

Wow, 1962 was frigid. Cold winter, cold summer. If NYC had 8, I probably would have had 0 nights above 70 here.

1962 had 90 degrees the end of April and 99 degrees in May...It got cool the second half of July and it stayed cooler than average until the next Spring...The hot days had lower minimums...

I think I would disregard TEB..they've been running 2-3 degrees above most surrounding stations even EWR

Yeah it does seem a bit warm on the borderline days. Maybe the average of TEB/Park is a good blend. :-)
