MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0662

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

1049 AM CDT THU APR 28 2011

AREAS AFFECTED...MIDDLE ATLANTIC INTO UPSTATE NY/VT

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 253...

VALID 281549Z - 281645Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 253

CONTINUES.

NORTHERN EXTENT OF HIGHER INSTABILITY AIRMASS EXTENDS INTO THE LOWER

HUDSON VALLEY REGION OF NY. THIS AXIS IS VERY NARROW AND WILL

STRUGGLE TO SHIFT DOWNSTREAM INTO SRN NEW ENGLAND WHERE LOW LEVEL

TRAJECTORIES ARE UNFAVORABLY OFF THE COOLER ATLANTIC. FOR THIS

REASON IT APPEARS THE GREATEST SEVERE THREAT WILL REMAIN INLAND

ACROSS SERN PA/NJ INTO EXTREME SRN NY...ESPECIALLY AHEAD OF FAST

MOVING BOW ECHOES. ADDITIONALLY...GIVEN THE STRONG SHEAR IT/S NOT

OUT OF THE QUESTION THAT AN ISOLATED TORNADO MAY BE NOTED WITH THE

AFOREMENTIONED BOW ECHOES OR SUPERCELL-LIKE STRUCTURES.

I'm sure ABC wasn't trying to get the hype machine going by emphasizing that this is the same storm system that caused all those deadly tornadoes in the South... and Bill Evans is saying he's never seen anything like this before in reference to the radar detecting 2 funnel clouds (?). Oy.

I'm so sick of everything being "worst ever", "never before" from the media.

The radar's not all that impressive IMO. We've seen much, much more impressive outbreaks in our area. A couple of warned cells here and there. Most of the wind being produced is via the pressure gradient b/t the intense Canadian low and high pressure to the east. No doubt we've got some strong storms around, but this isn't that bad.

Here in Villanova I had one rumble of thunder and a 10 minute downpour with the line. Winds gusted to 40mph w/ the band but are now very light.

The sensationalism is out of control. I mean how many "Snomageddons" have we had in the past 18 months. Yea it's been active but come on. Had the media been like this back in March '93 they would have all had their collective heads explode.
