CNYWxGuy
NWS BGM confirmed a 'strong' EF-2 tornado in the Town of Erin, NY in Chemung County. With winds up to 130mph... this stands to be the strongest tornado to hit C NY / NE PA (BGM cwa) in nearly 13 years since the infamous May 31 / June 2, 1998 regional Tornado outbreaks which affected a large portion of NY and PA. The most recent tornado of comparable intensity to hit the region was an EF-2 with winds up to 120mph which occurred on May 16, 2009 in Georgetown, NY in Madison County. (Reference •The May 16, 2009 Severe Weather Outbreak Part I : The pre-storm environment and •The May 16, 2009 Severe Weather Outbreak Part 2 : A Mesoscale and Radar Perspective of the Tornadic Supercells) Not sure just yet, but this may in fact be the strongest rated tornado to hit NYS since the infamous May 31 / June 2, 1998 Tornado outbreaks. Based on memory recall and a brief perusal of the various NWS archives around NYS, there has only been a handful of tornadoes higher than F / EF-1 intensity to hit NYS since 1998. The most recent was the pair of EF-2 Tornadoes that hit W NY on July 24, 2010, but they were given a 'moderate' EF-2 rating with winds up to 120-125mph. According to the NWS Upton Archive, an F-2 Tornado struck Westchester County NY on July 12, 2006, but there was no official wind speed estimates given in the PNS. All in all, when you take into consideration that 1) This storm produced a 'Significant' Tornado followed by a 2nd 'Weak' Tornado and 100mph straight-line winds, 2) It occurred in the dead of the night around 130AM, 3) and just miles / minutes from directly affecting two fairly densely-populated city centers, its quite amazing there was no loss of life or known injuries outside of 2 horses. This very easily could have been a MUCH bigger headline story... and not for the right reasons. CNYWxGuy
Sure looked like a tornado went through Pharsalia yesterday. http://www.facebook....447.61398605828 Wow...! Looks like a no-brainer based on the fact there seems to be a well-defined path coupled with the fact that the trees are laying in a chaotic pattern as opposed to a uniform direction. Looks indicative of strong EF-1 category winds (105-110mph?) in my best guess, although I'm sure BGM will be publishing their survey results shortly...
