RutgersWx92
Wow, "only" down to 21F in the Gardens today. That valley SMQ lies in must work wonders Incredible how well the area around that airport radiates. I live pretty close to the airport and I'm frequently several degrees warmer for nighttime lows than it is on radiational cooling nights.
Big Jims Videos
couldn't post all day was tied up at work-- But I wanted to chime in about this "mystery" snow we keep getting up here. It snowed about 3/4ths of an inch overnight--around midnight to 1 am here in Pittston--Nothing on the radar, no lake effect bands nearby...just beautifully formed snowflakes-a very dry snow too. Looked fake on my windshield. Lake effect is a strange beast.

Also, there has been a lot of odd snow showers. It's just mostly Lake Effect and such resulting from this cold air and the winds coming from the lakes. It's just a really good setup to have all these showers enhanced from the lakes. The lakes are still very warm and we got this sudden cold shot of air, perfect for the lakes to throw moisture into the atmosphere. As for not showing up on radar, I guess it's just the nature of the little beasts. Also, BGM radar is down.

Probably the fact that lake effect produces very high ratios, if it's relatively light, radar would have a hard time detecting it. Sometimes clear air radar actually works better, because it's more sensitive.

chrisNJ
Left for work at 0530 this morning. Nothing on ground here in Easton. Once I hit Phillipsburg, NJ there was a coating on the roads and the crews had salted the roads. Coating of snow on the ground all the way to Hackettstown, NJ, then barely anything by the time I got to Mt Arlington. Just goes to show how little moisture you need when it is this cold. I want to see how these flurries/snow shower produce in the wake of the next, colder front.

Parts of Forks Twp. had a solid 1"+, but here in Martins Creek I barely had a dusting. I think it happened around 11PM last night, according to my daughter. I heard north towards Bangor, nothing. Very localized. Hoping for more lake effect around here next week!

Absolute Humidity
Radiational cooling really chilling down. Plus what's really interesting is the heat island effect as it's 23 in the boro right now and just 1.5 miles south east in the sticks it 14! famartin
Most places set their 24-hour lows just before midnight. TTN has gotten into the teens for the first time this winter with a low of 18. That's only 5 degrees above the minimum temperature during all of last winter!
