Powerball
Well, I'm just pointing this out because the earlier records may not be representative of today. It's a proven fact that downtown weather stations tend to run 2 or 3 degrees warmer than other stations. I mean Detroit in 1930 was nothing like it is today -- it was a burgeoning metropolis of 1.5 million people, with numerous auto factories working around-the-clock. All of the buildings and roads would have absorbed lots of heat (and cities didn't have trees and green spots like they do today to mitigate this effect) -- it was literally a concrete jungle. Plus all of the factories would have spewed a lot of heat. I don't think it's fair to compare records taken in a city of 1.5 million with those taken in a small town of 20,000 persons in the middle of a field at the airport. Well Detroit is still as large as it was, it's just that everyone has sprawled out fron the center into the suburbs. If anything that would help the cause with all the added concrete (Metro Detroit isn't really cookie-cutter foresty like most suburban areas in big cities, it's heavily grided and dense). As for the factories, that's everywhere in the country now. Then for Metro Airport, the tarmac usually heats up pretty well too. In fact, they're usually one of the warmer spots in the area during these types of setups. EDIT: Even then, I don't think it makes that big of a difference WRT the temperatures in the grand scheme of things.

My bad, should've worded it differently as I welcome input from anyone. 12 doesn't seem like a lot but like josh, or possibly you, were saying yesterday, there is probably alot of 88/89 degree days. on_wx
The temps with the humidity is making it feel like 109F here. Temp is currently 88F Dewpoint is 77F Humidex is 109F This is painful heat and humiditiy. MUCAPE is 6,000j/kg right now according to the SPC mesoanalysis page. In the severe thread they said it hit 8,000j/kg just north of here earlier this afternoon. The downtown Kitchener weather station is reporting 92F right now. Stebo
ORD is 0.41" away from making this the wettest May on record (1945/7.50"). Looks like the storms that passed by only dropped .08 and unless something else fires (which looks unlikely at this point) Chicago will fall short of this record. cyclone77
Turned out to be a pretty quiet day here. Was cloudy most of the day as the leftover cloud debris from last night's storms rolled through. Did get a few sprinkles. This event essentially skipped the whole QC area. We don't need anymore rain anyway. Many of the area farm fields have standing water. The heat island effect did not exist as much back in the day either, as it does now. Some of the 1960s and early 1970s lows at DTW are a lot more representative of a good radiating spot, but these days its really no different than DET. Oddly enough, recently DTW has been warmer than DET. Heres the past 7 days Today: DTW: 92/70 DET: 90/69 Yesterday: DTW: 89/61 DET: 89/60 Sun: DTW: 80/59 DET: 79/58 Sat: DTW: 70/54 DET: 70/54 Fri: DTW: 57/47 DET: 56/45 Thu: DTW: 71/47 DET: 72/45 Wed: DTW: 63/51 DET: 62/48 FWIW I did note that the low last winter at DTW was -5 while DET was 1, but again, overall it probably balances out. SpartyOn
Not a bad May!! Was pleasant and from time to time was warm. Think this would be the first above normal temp month since Dec for DTW. A turning point? End of June will answer that question.
Powerball
Most of the action missed us just to the NW. Which is cool, it will bold well for tomorrow as we can heat up better despite the cooler temps aloft (drier grounds).

Chicago WX
The LAF rain gauge took a crap, so no idea on the exact total for May. Going off local COOP and CoCoRahs, it's in the neighborhood of 5.00-5.50" (EDIT: 5.82" at WLFI)...most of which fell in the last 10 days of the month. Certainly not a top 10 month, but above average. Couple that with the 10.00-11.00" combined from March and April and it's been an excessively wet spring here...like many others have experienced. 3rd 90 degree day of the month (and year) today, the same number as last year. I'm surprised we didn't hit 100º in May.
