Since 1971 NYC is getting around 20% more precipitation than it got from 1870-1970...There is probably more clouds around also and between the extra moisture and clouds the average daily max temperature stayed steady or dropped and the average min rose...

Unc, thanks for the stats. Nate and I were talking about the increase in precip possibly also resulting in bigger snowstorms in the winter.... could be some merit to those ideas. If you do a month by month analysis, how many of the 12 months are tending towards wetter and how many towards drier?

interesting thing is the 1950's and 60's were the driest but those years are noted for hurricanes and snowstorms. There was some consistency until the fifties when a long term drought started and lasted until late 1966.

I think all the months are getting wetter especially the Spring months...

Great stats, Uncle. From around 2003 on really stands out.

October 2005 was the wettest month that I have seen here.

It produced the most basement flooding that I can remember

here in Long Beach from rainfall since the spring of 1983.

Hey BW, do you keep precip records? Im curious did you record 20" of rainfall in October 2005-- because I know parts of Long Island got between that and two feet of rain that month. Also, were you around to record any rainfall numbers in 1983? A very weird year that was-- despite all the scorching heat and one of JFK's hottest summers (second only to 1966 I think), I believe we got 70" to 80" of rain that year.

Interesting analysis but the 1950's and 1960's seem flukishly dry. It looks like a working long-term average is 45" per year.

Still, this summer will be remembered as a hot and partially dry one. The summers that are remembered as cool and/or rainy will remain, for recent years, 1960, 1967, 1969, 1972, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1989, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2009. A few days with a half-foot or more don't create nearly the negative perception of a summer than weeks and weeks of drear (to coin a word0 typical of the summers I listed. Granted, 1969 had a hot week in July and a few heat spikes in May and June, and not a bad August. Ditto 1972 with two weeks in July and August, and a week in September. But what one remembers are the number of days it was painful to go into a pool.

Snow! (the following winter)

1975: 17.3"

1989: 13.4"

2009: 51.4"

2006: 12.4"

1903: 32.2"

1927: 14.5"

Not a good indicator for the winter... three good years, the rest uniformly blah. May not mean anything, but there you have it.

You can toss 2006 since it was an El Nino, even 27, 28 and 03 I think were either neutral or El ninos. Again 1989 shows up. I'm surprised 2000 was not in there, I think for alot of the area 2000 would be a top 10, maybe not for Central Park but most other stations. 1975 and 1989 would be the strongest ones to use...the NAO again is the decisive factor this winter much like we knew it would be last year...the fact it has just gone positive recently again is a good sign for the winter, especially if it remains mainly positive through October. The water temp profile though in the NATL still cares me somewhat regarding the NAO this winter. The one thing I again feel sure of is that there is going to be some serious cold air in December.
