LocoAko
I know this isn't exactly "scientific", but since it pertains to climate change... Clifford
Unfortunately I am having a lot of troubles finding a lot of information about the documentary. There is a Wikipedia article about the Carteret Islands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carteret_Islands Also read the Discussion Page. Here are a couple of other films about the islands. The predicted sea level rise over the last half century is about a foot. It hasn't been enough to overrun the islands. I am not seeing specific details on the sea level changes on the islands, but I think it has been somewhere over 4 feet over the last 50 years, although most of the measurements in the films seem to indicate shifting sand and water levels, and likely are confounded with erosion. In the Wikipedia article, Coral Atolls occur on top of sinking Volcanoes as part of a natural geologic cycle. I still have to try to envision the changes that have occurred between now and the previous glacial period when these may have been like towering mountains. Anyway the rate of sinking & erosion seems to be greater than the rate of sea level rise. And, thus one can not blame global warming. What they really need to do... Build a rip rap wall around the islands. Get a deep sea dredge and bring up new soil to the surface, and actively rebuild the islands.
skierinvermont
I was confused about the same thing Clifford from the trailer. Perhaps they are anticipating the future sea level rise? We'd have to watch the documentary I guess.
