* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for...

northeastern Davidson County in central North Carolina

southern Forsyth County in central North Carolina

southwestern Guilford County in central North Carolina

That cell just went right over my house...it wasn't very impressive. It does seem to be strengthening however.

First time posting, long time lurker here. I live about 15 miles Northwest of Greensboro and we've been getting hammered with heavy rains for about an hour. Picked up 1.06 since 7:00, and still raining pretty good.

Welcome and congrats on the rain. That same shower started off down my way (Randolph). making today the 4th day in a row with measureable rain. I'm expecting our area to do pretty well over the next few days, espeacilly the next 24-30 hours Hopefully the GA and eastern NC/SC guys will bennefit as well, they could sure use some.

Radar looks like the foothills and escarpment should really do well tonight. (Nice Call Robert)

When do you think severe weather will arrive? I am so afraid this is gonna be hail damage like we had in April. Hope everyone stays safe

After the sun comes out some there will be a chance. Really need the breaks in the clouds, and once the ULL moves northwest, and we get into a downslope flow off the mtn chain a few cells could do that, probably Wed, Thur or Friday. Few and far between probably.

Nice cell just went over here. A few good CG lightning strikes. One very close to the house. Also some very heavy rain with just over 1" in the bucket.thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Grass will be waist deep by mid-week.

I just got my grass done (and my dad's) in time. Its been raining steadily for the last hour, a nice cool 58 degrees. No lightning though. I think the Carolinas will do ok with scattered showers most of the week. This has been the best Spring, bar none, since I've been here at this house in 2003. Consistent rains, lush green everything...I'm just hoping the usual doesn't happen in June/July, but already I feel like I'm living on borrowed time...the "switch" should have been flipped already.

Well that was rather unfortunate for a while. A MAJOR lightning bolt knocked out all of Southern Gaston county's power (at least around my neck of the woods it did), while up the road all was well. Everything was extremely pitch black; almost to the point where you couldn't see anything except a part of the sky illuminated by the rest of the city lights. Very loud thunder followed and torrential rain burst all the sudden. Just now got the power back on a couple of minutes ago. I was almost ready to make dinner when it happened. Quite an interruption. There have been several ambulances, firetrucks, police cars, and a few of the city crew trucks traveling up and down 321. Power was out for an hour or two.

I've yet to record any measurable rain in May. Congrats to those of you that have been worried about when you'll have a chance to cut your lush, green grass... my yard is already dried up and brown...

Seems like you get rain when northern GA is in a wet pattern and usually when that happens its dry here and central NC. This upper low will probably have a tight cutoff on the south and west sides, but it may just clip your area later tomorrow. The NAM has already missed totals here (and from what I read other places). The new NAM has barely .50" in the next 60 hours and I'm already that much. I think Thursday afternoon will be interesting for some places as the ULL is due north , meaning some cells will fire off the moutains and roll down in severe fashion. And the long range still features split-flow, so theres another chance of good rain later on, with a good combo of a slow moving system to our west, and sw flow aloft and surface with Bermuda ridging. Typical pop up storm season should begin soon.

I cut up a loblolly pine that fell beside the house Wednesday night. Shows the dry times pretty well around here since 2005 especially. Look at the tightly packed rings since then...probably what helped kill it. I got a few other pictures of trees I've cut in Rutherford County and upper Cleveland, where its rained a lot, so I'll be interested in comparing the images once I upload them.

Thats fascinating Robert. We recently cut several 60+ year old red oaks at my parents. You could see the glory days come to an abrupt stop in the late 90s when the droughts started.

On another note the wind is pretty strong tonight. What a strange May its been. Hardly any rain, a frost, and now a sub 60 high.

Finished with 1.77" for yesterday and continuing to accumulate. .96" so far, which puts the total for this event to 2.73".

good grief you're racking up. I've got .83" total. Looks like your area was on the sweet spot (nw side) of the circulation plus your convection. Looks like the footills west of here is in a stalled band and that sweeps back southeast to the northern Upstate. Eventually this may fill back in and rain steady once again here.

Monsoon at the house this morning. I'm at work but wife called and said Garden washing away. Heavy DBZ's on radar

Probably the same rain that made it up my way this morning around 8:00. Measured a quarter inch in about 15 mins,, then had to leave and go to work....1.50" since 7pm last night .

Congrats to all of those that managed to get some rain. It's now been 13 days since I've had rain and I finally ran the sprinkler system Saturday night. At least the dry hot weather we had killed the poa annua I had in the backyard. Powerstroke, I know poa annua is hard to get rid of but do you have any tricks? My front yard is good since the bermuda is really thick and green there. While I had less in the backyard this year, I still had a fair amount.
