Not so fast. We could have a glorious spring, summer and fall with not a single 90F day. We'd need a ruling from the judges on the contest, tho.

I wonder what the is record minimum number of 90F days at each of the airports? I don't think it'd be zero.

Not even RIC has hit 90* this year. I wonder if Anthony can tell us what the latest 90* day is and the record minimum days of 90+ at KRIC.

Sure.....the latest date to feature the first 90-degree temperature at RIC is July 2, 1972. Meanwhile, the fewest number of 90-degree days in a calendar year for RIC is 14 days, which last took place in 1971.

In 2003, the first 90-degree day did not take place until June 24th. The last time we went April and May without any 90-degree days was in 2005 when the first day did not take place until June 6th.

For Washington, DC, I believe that the record minimum number of 90+ degree days is seven, set in 1886. That year, the first 90+ day did not occur until July 7, and the hottest it got all year was 92 on August 27. Of course, that was long before (Reagan) National Airport came into existence in 1941, and so the official measuring station was in downtown Washington (at 24th and M Streets, NW), rather than at the airport in Arlington, VA.

Since 1941, I believe that the record minimum number of 90+ degree days in DC is eleven, set in 2004. That year, the first 90+ day occurred early (April 19), but again, the hottest it got all year was 92. That temperature occurred four times (May 23, June 9, June 17, and July 2).

One more interesting note: In 1979, there were twenty 90+ days in DC, but the first did not occur until July 12. I believe that's the latest first occurrence of a 90+ day in DC history. However, the high temperature that year was 97, on August 10.

Cool. Much appreciated, as always. What format is all this data in?

Interesting info. Do you know the latest first 90+ degree day and record minimum number of 90+ degree days for Baltimore/BWI?

No, I have nearly complete daily historical weather statistics for DC, but not for Baltimore or any other city. Perhaps someone else here has it for Baltimore. I wonder if in the northeast, there might be a major city that did not reach 90 one or more years. For example, I would think that might be the case for Boston.

I have compiled an average first date for the temperature reaching at least 90 degrees F in Washington, DC, 1872-2010. That date is May 20, with a range of March 22 (1907) to July 12 (1979). By 30-year periods (29 years for the first period), the average dates are:

1872-1900: May 28

1901-1930: May 15

1931-1960: May 17

1961-1990: May 19

1971-2000: May 19

1981-2010: May 18

Thursday still a chance for DCA, but looks like Mon-Tuesday next week has a good chance for all 3 stations.

If that's true, the 2 contestants in play are RodneyS (Jun 1st for all 3) and tplbge (May 27th for all 3).
