Just got off the phone with my colleague in Mercer County and they have extensive damage. They were under a SVR warning when their 911 center was flooded with calls reporting a tornado on the ground in downtown Celina (fairly large city). They have extensive damage on the East side of town including numerous cars and boats that were flipped, 3 houses that they are calling demolished, an Aldi store that was destroyed, significant damage to Wal-Mart and Menards and numerous other houses with some damage. Search & rescue operations are currently under way.

Some of the damage reports around the area seem a little interesting. Would not be surprised if at least a few of them end up being tornadoes.

Chased the Cells in St Louis the 1 in particular was supercellular to start, have footage of tail end charlie initilly with dry slot. Secod one we was just north after darkness, encountered north side of a mesocyclone with 1.5" hail and 60 mph winds. Then made the Paducah bow echo with 1/2 inch hail near Exit 3 with 55 moh winds measured. Pretty exciting day. Could have been worse had the cells not gone more linear early. Hope to get some pics up and from Sundays event in Sc

I'll agree, a lot of the damage descriptions could go either way (straight line vs. tornadic). Plus the time of day is not conducive for accurate storm spotting, so there could be an element of erring on the side of caution.

Yeah, I noticed some brief circulations in that line as it came through this area...one of them in the county south of here appears to be an area with enhanced damage so it will be interesting to see what that was.

One of the suspicious reports (no TOR at the time)

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0490

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

1246 PM CDT WED APR 20 2011

AREAS AFFECTED...NE TX...SRN AR...NRN LA...WRN MS

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 201746Z - 201915Z

A SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS NE TX...FAR NRN

LA...SRN AR AND WRN MS THIS AFTERNOON. LARGE HAIL AND WIND DAMAGE

WILL BE THE PRIMARY THREATS WITH THE ACTIVITY. A WW MAY BECOME

NECESSARY ACROSS THE REGION AS STORMS INITIATE.

A SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT IS CURRENTLY LOCATED FROM NE TX EWD ACROSS

SRN AR INTO NW MS. ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE BOUNDARY...SFC DEWPOINTS

ARE IN THE UPPER 60S AND LOWER 70S F. MESOANALYSIS ACROSS THE WARM

SECTOR SHOWS STRONG INSTABILITY IN PLACE WITH MLCAPE VALUES OF 2000

TO 3500 J/KG. IN ADDITION...THE SRN EDGE OF THE STRONGER MID-LEVEL

FLOW IS LOCATED FROM THE BOUNDARY NWD SUGGESTING THE GREATEST

POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE STORMS WILL EXIST ALONG THE BOUNDARY WHERE THE

COMBINATION OF INSTABILITY AND SHEAR IS MAXIMIZED. AS LOW-LEVEL

CONVERGENCE INCREASES THIS AFTERNOON...CONVECTIVE INITIATION SHOULD

OCCUR ALONG THE BOUNDARY. THE MORE INTENSE CELLS MAY OBTAIN

SUPERCELL STRUCTURE WITH LARGE HAIL LIKELY. STEEPENING LOW-LEVEL

LAPSE RATES SHOULD ALSO PROMOTE A WIND DAMAGE THREAT WITH THE

GREATEST POTENTIAL OVER CNTRL MS WHERE LOW-LEVEL FLOW SHOULD BE A

BIT STRONGER.
