April 15-16 Severe Weather threat

Recommended Posts

Saw that coming live, while warning people in it's path. That was crazy.

Same here, I was updating via facebook as I know a lot of my friends have smartphones they are constantly on. Watching that WRAL feed was crazy, I had memories of watching this particular waterspout/tornado take out a pier in Myrtle Beach a few years back.

My first taste of one and really brought increased my love of storms and extreme weather.

I was following that cell earlier when it was making a run for Farmville. Definitely the strongest of the bunch at that time.

I caught this storm north of Greenville after it left the farmville area. When I first saw it you could see the back of the storm was all the way down to tree top level and it looked like a big ole salad bowl. When I got to it and started videoing it was very loose with several areas that I saw vertical motion but my video camera doesn't have zoom. Then it tightened back up and a nice wall cloud crossed right in front of me. Heres the vid

No damage to my home, but just 3 blocks away begins tree damage - several large trees down across the streets and some minor home damage. Several yards with debris closer by, insulation and the like. We did leave to look for any open restaurants, but didn't want to get into the mess that had been reported in the downtown, which is a little over a half-mile from the house.

Right before the storm, it grew totally calm, rain stopped, and then the power went out. Calm before the storm, I guess. We got in the closet, winds whipped up for about 15-30 seconds, and then calm again. Sirens have been blaring most of the afternoon and evening from emergency personnel. Just got power back about 30 minutes ago or so here. Another storm came through about an hour after the tornadic storm which dropped brief VERY heavy rain and marble-sized hail, which I'm sure hindered the cleanup process quite a bit. Hopefully can get some pictures tomorrow; it was getting too dark to take any tonight and we couldn't get to the hardest hit areas.

WeatherNC, thanks for the Farmville pics. My in-laws live there and FIL works for the town, he hasn't been home since all this started. They had some minor damage to their house but it can be easily fixed. I'm just thankful all of our family in the Snow Hill, Falkland and North Raleigh/Wake Forest areas are accounted for and safe with little damage to property. It's been a really exhausting day all around.

so does the 6th floor of wood hall lol....

a buddy's house in wilson got completely destroyed, everyone was ok though

wow, glad they're ok. I haven't been in Wilson since they built the 264 bypass. I hope all of those big old trees that line Raleigh Rd past Ward Blvd toward town are ok as well. I always liked that drive through there.

The storms were pretty mild back over here. The tornado warnings started after it all passed us. Blue skies broke out very fast. Cold front was right on its heels.

Wow, all the trees are fine :) We live in the neighborhood behind that near the Rec Park and Nash St. There are some trees down, though, at the little kiddie train at the Rec Park right on Raleigh Rd. I think there may have been some damage to the rec building and the bubble over the pool, it was hard to tell when we drove through there as it was getting dark.

What a crazy day. This will go down as one of the largest tornado outbreaks ever in NC. That tornado in downtown Raleigh looked like a monster. I had the wife and kids in the bathtub and was watching in on WRAL, saying it was headed for Wake Forest, and the the power goes out. I have never felt as scared as I did at that moment, We got lucky and it went a little east of us to Rolesville instead.

Incredible Day. Chased from Florence, SC up to Lumberton, NC. Ended up on the cell that went by Dillon,SC . Structure was something I had never seen in person, and that included a few chases on the plains. Inflow was amazing. Visibility was zero is some places where dirt and dust were driving into the storm. Had a small tree fall on our car as we were driving, didn't do any damage. Will have to review the photos to see if I did indeed see a tornado, but the whole wall cloud was barely off the ground, could have easily had some vorticies on the ground. But utterly amazing.

Problem was, it was nearly impossible to stay with cells. The only chance you really had was to hit the interstates, but it was almost an impossible task. Eventually headed southeast and intercepted the cell that put down a tornado near Boardman/Clarkson. But, despite seeing the wall cloud (was almost impossible to find a clearing to look over the 50ft trees on Hwy 74), boneheadedly decided to continue on to the cell that was warned near Kingstree...it's rotation decreased as we eventually caught up with it near Conway, SC. Just got back home, completely and totally exhausted.

This was initially reported as thunderstorm damage, but it turned out to be a tornado, so add one to the tornado count...

Glad to hear, minimal damage here, a few large limbs down out back, although there is some roof damage up the road a mile or so, and worse as you get into Farmville. Hearing reports of people being cut out of mobile homes in Onslow county atm, and even more disheartening is the situation in Bertie county. Information has been very slow to come out of there, but WCTI has a reporter there with a VFD team, and the unconfirmed death toll is at 6. The community of Colerain is reported to be ground zero, again, info very slow coming out, but houses completely wiped per the reporters account. Glad today is over, very stressful, exhausted, and going to bed. Thankfully we made it through unscathed, some were less fortunate.
