Channel 5 news just had a PD Officer from Ft. Smith on, said they will not set off the sirens unless there is confirmation from NWS of a tornado moving into the city, or a PD officer or media sees it. Not smart.

yeah that's one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of.

That's been their policy for as long as I can remember. I lived in Fort Smith for 15 years and they set off the sirens maybe three times other than tests. Worked out real well until '96...

Is it because they don't want to open the shelters up or what? I don't know if it's a good policy to not open the shelters up until the tornado sirens go off because that would put people in harms way trying to get to the shelters.

Reports from chasers in the Tushka, OK area...

Aaron Dooley:

Moderate tornado damage at current location. Poles knocked over, roofs torn off, brick buildings damaged, trees up rooted, vehicle windows blown out, damage to homes. people wandering in the street with no where to go. Damage path is approximately 3/4 miles wide. Fire department does not have adequate personnel to handle situation.

Aaron...:

Heavy Tornado Damage to Tushka and surrounding areas. Houses destroyed, injuries and fatalities reported. Roads are blocked and search and rescue is going on.
