ORH_wxman
That's right where I work. That pile never goes away; the one right by Dicks Sporting goods...Ive seen it there well into May...even with last years mediocre snowfall it was still around in May. I was surprised to see it still as high as it was. In the past, most years it is gone by late April, but I think the larger parking lot space in the past 5 years or so has made it last a bit longer than previously...I didn't realize it lasted until May last year. In 1997 back when it had a hard time lasting longer, it stuck around until Mid-May thanks to the 4/1/97 storm. Even in 1996, the pile was gone around April 20-25th or so. It lasted well into May in 2001 though. I'd have to check to see if they still dump a lot of snow there, but the lot around the Big Y in Holden, MA used to have snow very late...being in a better location to retain the snowfall longer than the exposed and lower down Lincoln Plaza. It didn't have as much parking lot to pile the snow, but it still usually out-lasted the Lincoln plaza snow. I'll have to drive by there sometime in the next week to see if they still pile up snow there.

Parts of the Miss River area have seen more severe storms in 1 week than we will see in 10 years. I suggest you move. JMHO.. Anyway this topic= Thats impressive. Though right before I left for vacation, I did snap a couple pics of actual snow pack in the woods on winter hill that was still hanging on in a couple of patches. That was April 15th. Considering we got pretty royally screwed in March, the retention was fairly impressive. Usually you want some solid reinforcing snow in March to get snow pack to stick around into April, but we managed to do that without much additional snow at all. One of these years, we will get another 2001, but it may be awhile. That was truly amazing how long that pack lasted. It was still well over a foot in the 2nd week of April. ORH_wxman
Obviously, I don't remember much since I was 6 turning 7, but how elevation dependent was the early spring 2011 snow pack? It was quite elevation dependent in 2001...mostly because there was an elevation snow bomb on March 30-31, 2001 very akin to the Feb 23-24, 2010 snow bomb. Latitude was big as well. ORH was the cutoff as is often the case in those late season latitude/elevation combo events. The southern side of the city had bare ground in most spots by the end of March while the northern side of the city and into Holden had a 8-10" snowpack still on April 10th. It was pretty crazy actually. N ORH county near the NH border still had like 18-20" at that time.

Thanks. 3/31 seems to be a good day for late season snow events, but really it is just a day of extremes, just like I love. Ive had birthdays on 3/31 over 90F, then of course there's been 3/31-4/1/97.

Strong late season snowpack kept the local backcountry skiing going through April. One of the best Spring skiing years I can remember. I had friends from Alaska staying here for a few weeks and even they were impressed.

Heaven!!! :sun: Come on it hasn't been that nice down here. BDR is only +0.5 for the month and we've only seen 70+ for a few hours. Rainfall is 1.24 inches above normal with rain falling every other day so far this month. All but 8 days have been at least mostly cloudy with fog reported on 18 of 25 days so far. Not a disaster, but no where near a great month weather-wise. It's as others have said: a typical April in New England which generally isn't the month for nice weather.
