Tuesday looks like trash now from the pike north. Models delay the surface warmth more and more each run. We will probably get a decent day on Wednesday, then I bet the low cuts off just east of us and we drizz for 3 days after that. Then Greenland blocking returns and we get more glorious spring days like today - dry, windy, cold garbage.

I will head SW on Tuesday if the warm front doesn't look like it will punch through.

BTW, I was at wawa today for a hike; the skiing trails still have some snow, near the top there is more cover then not, but obviously no where near enough to ski. It was damn cold and windy at the top today though (for late April), probably around 40F.

Yeah, I check out the webcams from time to time, and almost have gone to hike it and do some short runs, but never got around to it.

Too much to do...

don't let the chilly temps fool ya, it's sunscreen time...and tick time...

got a light sun burn on my face today, spent the day in holden, ma planting trees...also i know DEET is bad...but if you spray some on the bottoms of your pant legs or other parts of clothing it helps keep ticks away, you don't have to spray it on your skin...

Tomatoes eh, Joe?

I haven't put too much of my outdoor garden in yet, but I do have a few of the Early Girl and Big Boy tomatoes planted outside, so I had to cover them with a sheet....kinda sucks since we're past the 50% frost date by a week, but it's reality when you have strong NW flow during the day and then the high settling on top of us. I doubt we see a hard freeze tonight, but patchy frost is sure possible, and I don't want to take any chances. Tomorrow I'll be planting most of the garden including yellow squash, Cheyenne bush squash, green beans, etc. Still time for the heat-lovers which won't go in until May, like the eggplants and melons.

Sitting at 43.8/29 here, hoping to stay around 35F or so on the hill.

Man what a torch on the Euro for next week. 80+ seems likely for many

18z DGEX has 80s approaching NYC at 120 hours...GFS is also very warm for next week all the way up to Canada.

DEET is fine in small doses if you use it on your clothes. I've used it a lot for hiking and certainly haven't perceived any negative effects from sporadic application...it's pretty much a necessity for backcountry and farm work in the late spring in the North Country.

I found winter in New England this week. Took the family to Sugarloaf. The mountain is still covered side to side and top to bottom. Tuesday was a great day for skiing. Wednesday saw too much freezing rain - they eventually shut down the lifts due to ice on the lifts and a bit of thunder. This morning I awoke to a heavy snow shower. Some great turns yet to be had when it warms up....

Here's a few pics from winter this week.

Snow flakes were in the air a few times every hour all day long here.... Even down at 250 ft elevation in the Mohawk Valley it would turn to a graupel or wet snow flake situation in heavier showers. The high was 41, but most of the time it was in the 30's. I took a great 6 mile hike in the Plotterkill Gorge west of SCH ...on the open ridges the wind almost blew us over at times. :snowman:

What is the Plotterkill Gorge? Do you have any pictures, and what is the elevation like there?

I wonder if any of the higher terrain of the 'Bergs or Catskills saw accumulating snow?

This page shows it pretty well: http://hikingplotterkill.wordpress.com/

I saw a several small "weenie snow patches" deep in the gorge in the extreme shade.

I saw on the cbs 6 page that some of the hills in Schoharie County had a .25" coating..... but while the flakes were in the air all day here it was nothing approaching accumulating snow...just a nice effect. :)
