Filled 350 gallons of heating oil since October @ roughly 3.70/gal avg.

Our heat turned off last week for a day. We froze. The day before I did some avg electrical work doing junction boxes, switches/dims, and a bathroom vent/heater. we thought we were out of oil or maybe I made an error in wiring or etc.

I checked all of the wiring, but forgot to check the emergency switch to furnace. Called oil guy..we search around for an hour with no luck. Charged 89$ for the hr.

I'm prepared to call electrician....when he was leaving he saw the generator switch to furnace was flipped to neutral underneath the breaker panel.

ugh.

Well that drop was a temporary reflection of the global economic crash. If the world economy actually does recover and start a period of steady growth I see no reason why oil wouldn't continue upward. Demand will just keep increasing and you can't bring new oil fields online fast enough.

This is why I favor us getting off oil as a country (at least for our main power grid) because we are gonna be at an increasingly disadvantageous position as our relative GDP size shrinks. More and more we'll be at the mercy of the bigger (they will pass us by 2020) countries like China in terms of purchasing the scarce comodities. China, India etc. will have more purchasing power out around 2030.

That's easier to say in hindsight. A couple years ago everyone that locked in got burned when prices dropped.

heh, I like the idea of "getting off" of oil as well, all we have to do is convert 100's of thousands of homes

my woodstove was the savior this winter keeping oil cost to around 1k (still heats water too). Wood  have been much more otherwise... it's a no brainer when it's free vs. $4ish per gallon

I'm jealous. we're thinking of a pellet stove insert but do not have much knowledge of them, aside they are within budget.

My opinion is to go wood all the way seeing you can score that free. Assuming you are able and willing to cut, haul, split, stack....

I'm a 3 cord a year burner and rarely pay for it :)

Natural Gas FTW.

We need a new furnace and we are debating switching to gas but propane ia ll that is available here so i'm not sure the trade off will be worth it. Propane is more expensive than natural gas, cheaper than oil but less btu's then oil. It would be a more expensive install because of the switch. Decisions, decisions.

Main priority is to replace the fireplace with a woodstove.

Do they still have the tax credit for installing those?

Wood rocks for heating. The Pit uses oil for heat and hot water. While it has the energy efficiency expected of a 218 year-old house (ha), we've used less than 1000 gallons since September for 3100sf. Thanks to the stove.

Just had a snow shower at my place at 43 degrees. Steep lapse rates ftw.

Buddy says near-mid winter conditions at sugarloaf today. heavy heavy squalls.

Its been stuck at 33-35F here at 800ft all day long with flurries and light snow, but occasionally vis drops down to a mile or so. Twice today we've dusted up the cars and grass, but as soon as the snow goes back to flurries that light coating disappears quickly.

Up at 1,500ft its a different story as temps have yet to crack freezing... ranging from 28-32F with some ripping snow squalls. Winter hangs on here in the Greens.

Here's the web cam from 1,500ft... its been 19 degrees up there at the top and I'd have to believe there's at least 2-3" of new snow on the upper mountain.

It is a shame business dictates the ski area closes because that snow is not even close to melting out up there yet.
