CoastalWx
Pleeze... Preaching to the choir here, but temp departure isn't the greatest indicator. We've had mild overnight lows in this garbage pattern. Normal Springs in a monster +AO isn't "normal", at least to me "Normal" springs are large diurnal temperature differences, not drizz, high 47 low 40 for a +0 "normal" day. It's been normal, I don't know what you're talking about. Sure some April's have featured an 85F day, but then the next 5 days went on to be 39F and drizzle. We haven't had many of those days. We've had a couple of rainstorms, but many days in the upper 50s and 60s too.

We have had plenty of 35/63 or 32/55 and sun type days as well along with 42/44 drizzle type days. Its normal to have both in April.
Mr Torchey
I wouldn't go that far, though it hasn't been a disaster either. BDR is only +0.8 for the month with 10 of 18 days with measureable precip, only 1/3 of the days with little to no clouds, and fog on all but 5 days this month. I believe leaf out is also behind where we were a year ago, though that was an unusual year. Last year was a FREAK spring, temps and rainfall are above normal, not even a third the way through spring yet, everything is exactly on track, not sure what people expect for April 19th, then again if it was hot and humid most people would be bitching........oh well. I love spring.

My post was whining about crappy weather given the once in a decade spring +AO/NAO. And also that temperatures are not the best indicator, yet you still keep coming back with it to prove your point. In summary, 1) 47/40 might be normal but it's still garbage 2) dryslot 70F with 40 mph winds might be above normal temperature, but still garbage 3) numbers are irrelevant, this spring is garbage thus far 4) not having one nice 75F day before may is garbage. and no, windy post frontal garbage doesn't count. A warm, calm day (<10mph breeze that doesn't snap a daffodil stem) would be nice. Haven't had one yet.

I love spring. Precipitation has been WAY above normal, especially down here, where we got blasted by two mega-rainstorms in early March and have seen rain almost every day this April. Most folks had >2" rainfall 4/16 and then more rain with convective activity 4/17...it's definitely been a cloudy wet pattern, not that enjoyable. I happen to be on the "crappy April" bandwagon even though I understand that it's not been a cold month technically. The sensible weather has been poor with frequent and above average rainfall, above average cloud cover, and lots of east/southeast flow.

Logan11
I dunno what is wrong with a 70F day. All winter long we live with an indoor temp of 70 and often have it set on only 67 or 68. We find that perfectly comfortable so why is 70 not comfortable outside? 70 coupled with this sun angle is plenty comfortable. I personally would take a contant temp. of 70 from May to August if I lived in a utopian climate. LOL I said this spring is garbage, not that it isn't normal, I don't know what you're talking about? I think people forgot what the first 2/3 of a normal April are really like. 2010 and 2009 were both torches in April... Last year was just sick however...upper 80s in central VT in the first week of April! CoastalWx
People are spoiled by last spring. I think people forgot what the first 2/3 of a normal April are really like. What I like about April so far, is that it's been relatively sunny. That's key right there. I'm happy with 58-64F temps with sunshine. I think we get depressed when we have that constant regime of low clouds and fog. Even on the chilly days with a raw east wind....50F in full April sun feels so much better than 50F with total cloudiness. Also, the correlation of NAO and temps begins to change. With the decrease in wavelengths, you can have a -NAO and above normal temps. Opposite with a +NAO. It's possible to have a configuration of a trough-ridge-trough in the US, or a ridge-trough-ridge combo too. A -NAO begins to correlate to a se ridge later in Spring. I think the position of the features becomes more important, rather than the phase. For instance it's possible to have a -NAO, but also to have above normal temps too. It will have to depend on the placement of other long wave features. Summer of '08 featured a -NAO, but was also cooler than normal...esp July. I have to say, there is something nice about the misty weather in a nascent spring landscape....50/47 here right now with some DZ. You'll be sure to see some chilly weather Thursday, could be one of those NW flow days where you're like 40F with instability cumulus behind the front while it's 60 and sunny here...
