I just heard thunder here in Toms River. There's another cell near Bridgeton in Cumberland County so the southern areas on NJ can get in on some action too! :)

Garden variety stuff, every one of em went right over my house just south of Hammonton. Some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen though. Was so big and hitting so hard it sounded like huge hail.

I saw that storm go over you...but I don't know why you slipped my mind though. My bad. :P

The rain was very fat here too, which I thought was first hail, but I ran outside and confirmed it wasn't.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0423

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

1023 PM CDT TUE APR 12 2011

AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL/NRN NJ...SERN NY...LONG ISLAND...SRN/WRN CT

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 130323Z - 130500Z

STORMS MAY IMPACT NEW YORK CITY WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR OR TWO...

HOWEVER ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN GENERALLY BELOW SEVERE

LIMITS.

VIGOROUS CONVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH AN ELEVATED BAND OF WARM

ADVECTION APPEARS LIKELY TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING NORTHWARD ALONG THE

NORTHERN MID ATLANTIC COAST INTO THE GREATER NEW YORK CITY AREA

BETWEEN NOW AND 05-06Z...BEFORE WEAKENING. THIS IS OCCURRING ABOVE

A RELATIVELY DEEP NEAR SURFACE STABLE LAYER...TO THE NORTH OF A

SURFACE WARM FRONT THAT IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN SOUTH/EAST OF COASTAL

AREAS. STEEP LAPSE RATES AND MOISTURE RETURN ABOVE THE FRONTAL

INVERSION APPEAR TO BE CONTRIBUTING TO WEAK TO MODERATE INSTABILITY

WITH MOST UNSTABLE CAPE ON THE ORDER OF 500 TO 1000 J/KG...WHICH MAY

BE STRONG ENOUGH TO SUPPORT A RISK FOR SMALL TO PERHAPS BRIEFLY

MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL. HOWEVER...DESPITE FAIRLY RAPID STORM MOTION

IN EXCESS OF 40 KT...THE LARGER SCALE ENVIRONMENT DOES NOT APPEAR

CONDUCIVE TO AN APPRECIABLE RISK FOR STRONG DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.

I went to bed around 10:30, so I missed that one line of storms physically.....but it was somehow incorporated into my dreams; I apparently was storm chasing with a few members on here and I guess I subconsciously heard the thunder, the rain, and the wind.

Now looking at the bands of storms pass us just to the east as they are hitting Long Island.

Thanks Ray

I happened to be up in NYC giving a talk last night and was interrupted by a huge blast of thunder so it must've been pretty wild for a bit. I'll try an upload a pic I took from the train - the clouds over northern Jersey yesterday afternoon were low and wave-like, almost like ribbons. Hard to describe, and not something I recall seeing before.

I did see some strange looking cloud formations up here yesterday. I recall thinking they looked like mammatus clouds but I dismissed that thought since there wasn't even any convection in the area or close by at that time.

I suppose we need to look on the positive side. Thursday AND Friday appear to be nice days, so we actually get 2 in a row this time...

I think we'll also salvage most of the day on Sunday (rain should end by mid-morning on Sunday).

Picked up about 1.25" of rain for this past event in Spring Mount PA.
