For comparative purposes, I've added the corresponding figures for Central Park. Clearly, Newark averages more snow than Central Park, with Newark at 26 and Central Park at 22.6, derived from the relative snow drought period of 1971/2000. Also, going through the above exercise makes you realize or remember how many mediocre years there have been.

For some of the smaller totals there may be duplicates that I didn't bother to mention... also, some of this is "guessing" about when a storm began and ended.

Clearly, Newark averages more snow than Central Park, with Newark at 26 and Central Park at 22.6, derived from the relative snow drought period of 1971/2000.

In terms of climatological reality, Central Park / Newark Airport probably average just about the same amount of snow each year; roughly 28".

For some of the smaller totals there may be duplicates that I didn't bother to mention... also, some of this is "guessing" about when a storm began and ended.

Agreed William.

Too bad we've fallen short of the records this year; if the Nina was weaker, we probably would've had a snowier Feb/March.

we lost the extreme blocking... extreme blocking is probably the only way to get snow in a nina this strong

correct me if im wrong which is highly likely, but i think the blocking faded after the Jan 11th blizzard in New England... The Jan 26th storm was more of a thread the needle case with the raging PNA and MJO i believe and a high pressure dropping SE from central Canada.. Unless there was a temporary -NAO at the time to get the storm off the coast?

it was transitioning from -1 to +1

which is also very favorable

Not quite. Newark averaged 28.45" per year and Central Park averaged 26.33," more than a 2 inch difference, for the period of 1941/1942 to and including 2010/2011. Should climatological reality override 70 years of stats?

Explain

Just noticed your request; I did not return to the board since I made that post and am just getting home from a long day now. I use the phrase "climatological reality" to assert that Newark Field and CPK average about the same amount of snow per year...and there is not much reason to draw a distinction between the two when it comes to snow...Newark is a sea level station, CPK around 132 feet so elevation difference is more or less negligible...the stations are just 12 miles apart and a NE / SW oriented line connects them...if it were a NW / SE line, then there would likely be a snowfall difference, but, as is, the line is NE / SW, and, along the Eastern Seaboard, snowfall increases in that direction are much more gradual.

Both stations are in urban areas, though CPK is in a bit of an oasis. Atlantic is close to both stations, though neither is what one would dub immediate coastal. Neither station is in the shadow of some gigantic mountain(s). I can't recall too many times over the years when one of the stations would be raining, the other snowing...and having it end up making some huge difference...though it may have happened a time or two. If CPK has run a little behind Newark since 1970 or so...I think some of it can be blamed on measurement problems that were very common in the Park up until only recently. But in terms of actual climate...there isn't much to distinguish between the two stations...with the five main factors...12 miles apart...similar elevation...a line drawn between the stations would align NE / SW...urban...and ...short distance from ocean.

As I said, not much difference between them...one thing you might note is that as one moves SSW from NYC towards the Pine Barrens of S. Jersey, things generally become more arid...

I believe N. Jersey in the vicinity of Morris and Passaic Counties is generally considered the wettest part of the state...particularly the orographically favored spots like the Charlotteburg Reservoir.

My source was the Historical Monthly Data from the NJ State Climatologist at Rutgers. I excluded the period of 1930-31 to 1940-41 because of missing or incomplete data for the years of 1930/31 and 1935/36.

Nevertheless, while I acknowledge that the differences in snowfall are not all that great, I believe that Newark still receives a little more snowfall than Central Park because it is about 10 miles farther inland, and the orientation from Newark Airport's obs. site to Central Park's is more closely aligned on a wsw to ene direction.

I believe N. Jersey in the vicinity of Morris and Passaic Counties is generally considered the wettest part of the state...particularly the orographically favored spots like the Charlotteburg Reservoir.

If I had to pick a town for snow *really* close to NYC...I think I'd go with West Milford in Passaic County. It is probably as snowy or snowier than any spot in Rockland or Westchester or any spot in Fairfield that is south of Danbury...along with the rest of NE NJ. Likely puts up the same #'s as certain parts of Orange and Putnam Counties...

Actually the fact the CPK is off to the NE and 130 feet or so higher has me feeling they are a 1/2 inch or so snowier than Newark per average year...again writing off any actual records discrepancy to faulty measurements...records show Bridgeport and JFK aren't that far apart when it comes to snowfall 24.9" / 21.3" through 6 April (1971-2000)...and we all know that's a lot of hooey....

Agreed about Bridgeport and JFK. But Newark is right on the edge of the coastal plain with the slightly higher piedmont areas lying just to its west (such as where Hillside, and the Oranges are located). I've noticed that on at least several occasions, that it was snowing at Newark but there was only a rain or rain/snow mix in Manhattan, which was probably the result of slightly lower boundary layer temps. at Newark. Though possibly more attributable to where a deformation band may have set up than it's slightly more inland location, on Feb. 11, 1994, Newark rec'd 18" while Central Park only rec'd 12.8." And I don't think that the slightly greater elevation of Central Park would make that much of a difference.

I tend to agree with Diego. While there isn't much differences between EWR and NYC, you can see in the temp ranges that EWR has a slightly more continental/rural climate than NYC... which might very well explain the slightly higher snowfall average at EWR.

lol yeah, neither of them is accurate. I go by the southern Brooklyn snowfall averages for this region, which puts it somewhere around 23.5"

Being that much further West also helps in marginal situations.

Doesn't mean that their average annual snowfall is higher...parts of Long Island have higher annual snowfall averages than NYC, though there are times when it is snowing in NYC and raining on that part of L.I.

Newark, being to the SW, is more apt to be the first to change over to mixed precip in a SW flow event...and in a developing coastal storm...areas further to the NE (SW CT, LI) will generally pick up more precip than those to the SW...many times areas towards Philly are left high and dry while from NYC N and NE, significant precip fell...March 2001 event was sort of like that...though the cutoff was a little N and E of NYC.

Neither is rural...they are both bad heat islands and CPK is simply the worse of the two...sea breeze is slightly more effective in reaching CPK than Newark and the shrubbery in the Park (along with the minor elevation increase) knocks a degree or so off the afternoon maxima.
