Rotation looks like it's got more broad as it's moved out of lincoln county. Cell passed through here with at least 70+mph winds. Had about 10 minutes of marble to quarter sized hail. The sound of the wind reminded me of Hugo. It had that high pitched whine. Got the whole family up out of bed and prepared to go to the basement. Things have calmed down now. downeastnc Posted April 5, 2011 Share Posted April 5, 2011 I'd say 70mph for a minute or less. I had the camera going rightafter I heard it pickup ferociously and went outside. Just now reviewing it. There's only 2 other wind episodes here that beat that speed since I've lived at this house since 2003, and that would be the 2004 high winds of March and the January 2006 low level jet episode. These were the highest Tstorm winds for sure I've seen ina very long time. Cant wait to see the video's Hopefully this mess holds up till it gets here around dawn......currently 72/63 ( temp actually went up last hr) so its plenty juicy enough and with the wind switch staying strong and sharp you would think it will hold up but I have seen it fall apart many many many many times. I know what you mean about running from door to door in the dark as I was doing the same. I keep the lights off in the house in situations like this and the The lightning knocked out the yard light, as well as all of the other yard lights around and it was pitch black except for the lightning and the cops lights..which trust me added to the effect lol. It was very intense but very cool. He did leave after 3 or 4 minutes though. While I was doing that, two smaller limps hit the roof and they scared the crap out of me. Now that they are back on I don't see any thing large though thankfully but I have no idea what has happened nearby. I'd be shocked if there wasn't some trees down...that was about the loudest I have ever heard wind roaring through the trees across the road and across the other side of the field. It is KILLING me this wasn't during the day so I can judge it properly but it sure sounded like things were breaking/crashing. It's about an 1/8th of a mile away and it's hard to say for sure over the loudness of the wind in the yard. Amazing that just about as soon as the rain started though the wind dropped back down to virtually nothing more than a light breeze. No hail here but did have some heavy rain of course. Way better than I ever thought it would be for sure given this area's luck with lines though. It's awesome seeing you get nailed and drilled like a pornstar though and coming away just as happy thanks. This was one of the best ones in a long time, several years, although last August was longer lasting and much more lightning and thunder, the wind absolutely ruled in this one. I'm uploading the video now of the tree cracking. Unfortunately it can't be seen, but can be heard. I'll post a link here when its done. Still raining, thats always a bonus too. I never would have thought it would have been that bad up your way watching that line weakening as it was hitting the mountains, but it damn sure did. So many things seem to have to line up just right for severe weather in the lee of the mountains that's for sure. This system was really well forecasted far out ahead of time for sure. I didn't get too excited about this system once it looked like it was going to just be mainly a line of storms like this because as I said my luck sucks with them but this is one of the rare cases where it delivered for once. Btw, some amazing cloud to cloud lightning back in this area of moderate rain for those who can stay up to see it. I wish I was a photographer because there have been some money shots. UNCCmetgrad Posted April 5, 2011 Share Posted April 5, 2011 Calmed down here now. Would estimate wind gust near 50 mph although only recorded 33. (darn trees) Did not hear any trees or limb breaking. You can't see much on the video because its dark here anyway, and the power was going off and on, and the action was in the back woods behind the house, so its dark there, other than lightning,but I guess it doesn't show up. Anyway, the sound of the tree cracking begins at 2 seconds and continues through 7 seconds, that why I bolt out the door becuase I heard it clearly and knew what it was , just wished I caught it . I'll check tomorrow morning , I'm sure I'll find it. It was one of those long, drawn out creaks, like what happens when an icestorm takes downa big tree. Anyway, the winds were 70mph I'm guesstimating, and during the flashes of lightning, which in the chaos I didn't get to film the tree tops , I guess I had the cam pointed down or soemthing, they were so high I was very nervous for a minute or so. I whipped out my camera right quick just as it was coming in. The beginning of it was definitely ominous as you can see bright green clouds whenever the flahses of lightning showed up. Winds had kicked up to a peak gust of 70mph and instantly with it came the extremely heavy rain. During this time, the wind had swept away my garbage can and threw it 10 feet from its spot onto my yard and dumped trash everywhere in the yard. As if that wasn't enough, then it decides to take my grill away and slam it into the back of my dad's car, which I hope didn't put a major dent in it. The lightning was awfully intense and had knocked out all of the outside power (streetlights, electric signs, etc.) Hail was pounding the ground a good bit (I couldn't tell how large due to everything being so dark). My dad decided to brave the storm by going out there to get the garbage can back into its spot but couldn't get the grill with the ground being all muddy and whatnot. He nearly got smacked by one of the tree branches off the old oak, which I warned on here earlier about avoiding...I'll have video of it up in a moment after I do some editing due to "unforunate moments"... The first picture here shows where the garbage can was. You can see the small bits of trash that sat there while the rest of it was thrown about. Took pic and posted on FB. Crazy, heart pumping rush (a little tension as well). The winds had to have been 70mph for a minute or so, maybe longer... I wish to high heavens I had had the cam pointed right at where I was watching through the woods when it was lightning, you can hear the winds but not see their effects on the vid, but I definitely saw some severe wind effects with the trees.
