kevlon62
Looking west toward roughly over Morse, IA early Sunday evening. There was some slight vertical motion at times with this, and perhaps some very broad rotation. It was pretty to look at with the sunset in the background, but that was about it. This was one of the northern cells that would go on 20 minutes later or so and exhibit some interesting characteristics near Tipton.

Roger Smith
This system continues to develop and while it may have underproduced in terms of tornados on Sunday, it really had a healthy count of hail and strong wind reports. I believe it may become tornadic yet today in parts of Ontario, Ohio into w PA and WV, Indiana, Kentucky and further south. The frontal contrast will increase as the low continues to deepen and colder air can accelerate over the Great Lakes. This is why I included southern Ontario in my tornadic threat zone and especially regions around Toronto, K-W, Brantford, Hamilton and Niagara. But a higher risk probably exists in east-central Ohio southwest into northern KY. Unusual thermal gradients near the warm front through s/c MI and ON but a robust warm sector spell violent instability to come with this during the daylight period. Would also watch for intense lightning ahead of the actual cold front near the crest of the warm sector as it moves out of MI into ON similar to an event in late March 1989 that caused widespread severe power outages. I have the feeling the atmosphere is very highly charged with this event and there will be intense lightning as a result.

OceanStWx
Before things really get going today with severe weather, I thought I'd briefly talk about what may have gone wrong yesterday with respect to tornadoes. From the pictures our chasers have posted in here, you can see that we were close yesterday (LCLs were plenty low enough to be favorable). So I don't think this was a case of being moisture limited, maybe a few degrees more could have helped but I don't think it held things back. Looking back the SPC mesoanalysis archive there was a steady drop in low level helicity from initiation onward. This was not forecast, as the LLJ was expected to help enhance this after sunset. To me it appears that there just wasn't enough turning in the lower atmosphere, despite favorable shear. Additionally, the only reports of wall clouds were tied closely to the surface low (from near Tipton down to Washington, Iowa).
