Clinch Leatherwood
alarming.... Now I thought american resources were in the region and in particular assisting with fallout mapping. If true....they know what is happening.....they know what is in the air....where to sample on the ground based on wx forecasting....you simply just do not go to some small town 30km from the reactors and day lets test the soil. Don't worry in a few days he'll come back and say he meant micro not milli. I'd be pissed if I lived near this burning wreck right now.

jacindc
NYT: But it was unclear why the levels of iodine were so high, said a senior Western nuclear executive, given that the prevailing breezes seem to be pushing radiation out to sea. “The contamination levels are well beyond what you’d expect from what is in the public domain,” said the executive, who insisted on anonymity and has broad contacts in Japan. “There is no way that stored fuel did not burn in a very significant way.” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/24/world/asia/24japan.html?_r=1&hp

Dunkman
There's no way they'd evacuate the workers for levels of 500 µSv/h. I was actually sympathetic to their needs of not releasing some information to avoid panic in the general public, but the near constant stream of contradictory information that has been coming out for the last week or so is doing little more than eroding any trust the citizens have in their government (I'm pretty sure they already don't trust TEPCO.) Two days later those Government officials then advised the IAEA officials. Yesterday, the IAEA decided to announce the most recent statement. P.S. Like the previous poster stated, they are not removing every worker from the plant for high radiation levels when the radiation levels they are stating is 500 microsieverts. Who are they kidding? Organizing Low
What do you do when a city of 36 million people come to believe they can't drink the water? as long as you keep eating your regular, nutritious diet + other fluids, you dont actually need to drink pure water. jacindc
as long as you keep eating your regular, nutritious diet + other fluids, you dont actually need to drink pure water. As long as you don't plan to make rice or pasta. Or baby formula (which authorities are already telling people in Tokyo not to make with tap water.) But I'm not really talking about whether the water will truly make people sick--it's the psychological impact of "this basic staple might be tainted." LithiaWx
So how bad is the water and food in the areas of Japan that are showing "problems"? Is this fear mongering, or is this a real threat to the Japanese people living in Tokyo? Can someone who knows about radiation please step in and inform us on what these levels mean? Are the acceptable levels set by a biased group?

Are the acceptable levels set by a biased group? Don't know the numbers, but if the Japanese government--which has a stake in maintaining calm--is saying this, then it's probably at a notable level: "Outside Tokyo the government said it had found radioactive materials at levels exceeding legal limits in 11 vegetables in Fukushima Prefecture, the Kyodo news agency reported. Shipments of the affected vegetables from there ended on Monday. On Wednesday Prime Minister Kan also suspended shipment of raw milk and parsley from neighboring Ibaraki Prefecture, Kyodo reported. The United States Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday that it would prohibit imports of dairy goods and produce from the affected region. Hong Kong also banned food and milk imports from the area." http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/24/world/asia/24japan.html?pagewanted=2&hp (the same article in which it discusses the advisory to not let infants drink the water)

Interesting how when winds picked up from the ESE...reading almost doubled... from 225 to 435 at 220 pm. Thought I had seen a layout of the facility and it was S of the reactors though I can't remember to be honest. For a time they had stopped monitoring at the main gate due to the lack of power. There is definitely some wide differences in the levels dependent on where they take readings or wind direction along with spikes when smoke/steam is observed. Quite a few believe that they haven't been forthcoming in more of the readings or haven't had the capability to get them. Just a few since the crisis has started - March 17 - http://www.google.co...oTrmlYA&cad=rja March 15 - http://www.google.co...YPAUQiQ&cad=rja

Low Pressure Lunacy
Daily reading at the plant - http://www.tepco.co....g/11032307a.pdf This is why I love coming to this weather forum. The level of intellect and the discussion of the intimate details found here is why I come almost every day to learn. It is very time consuming to do the research so when it is shared by so many everyone learns that much more. Also most here seem to enjoy the details unlike most people I know who always yell at me for delivering too much information and tell me I am making peoples eyes glaze over, so I had to say I really enjoyed seeing this document. Thanks Scott.
