JTA66
I know there's a difference between sleet and hail, but I'm not sure which one is occurring right now? How often do you experience a thunderstorm when it's 36 degrees?

famartin
I think my forecast of 2-4, possibly 6 is gonna bust at my friend's house in northern Passaic... seems like the northern edge is shrinking south as it moves east.

JCT777
That was nuts...thunder/lightning with hail (I checked the consistency and it certainly looked more like hail than sleet). Although now that the thunder portion is over, I think it's now a rain/sleet mix. Wild stuff here in Harleysville PA at my wife's workplace. JCT777
Parsley...that's what it looked like in Harleysville, and I would say it was most likely hail. Rare to see hail with temps in the mid 30's.
hazwoper
Its gotta be sleet, seeing as lightning/thunder is moving away and I am still seeing heavy ice pellets falling. My driveway is covered Temp has also dropped to 33.

Same here. If it wasn't for the thunder, I'd say sleet. But it certainly looks more like hail. Regardless, crazy weather tonight!
famartin
Need and object of comparable size (like a coin) to be a guide. Though it could be more sleet than anything else. Hail usually is cloudy, sleet is more clear. Just rain back home in Ewing, though a lot of lightning.

Parsley
graupel isn't clear though, right? Very interesting event. I'd tend to think they were HUGE sleet pellets, but maybe it was hail. The pictures were taken on my grooved doormat and the ice was accumulating between the grooves. Size was pea, at most (whatever it was).
famartin
graupel isn't clear though, right? Very interesting event. I'd tend to think they were HUGE sleet pellets, but maybe it was hail. Usually you get big raindrops in t-storms, and those are usually from melted graupel, I believe. Thus big sleet pellets would come from partially melted graupel pellets.
