0057: The restoration of electricity at Fukushima's reactors 3 and 4 is expected on Sunday - Kyodo.

BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk...e-east-12307698

Even if they can bring power to the reactors it still doesnt really mean anything. The explosion could have very well damaged much of the electrical distribution/infrastructure within the plant. Conductors that feed various pumps , valve controls, control relays and switch gears could be severed or shorted. Im an electrician by trade..Im not familiar with international code on nukes. But I assume its much more complicated than your average power house. Most Power Plants require all conductors be ran in rigid conduit and explosion & vapor proof fittings. Ive seen myself that explosion proof fittings do NOT work.

Basically bringing power into the building doesn't mean jack if it can't distributed throughout the building.

0118: The Tokyo fire department is sending dozens of special fire engines to the Fukushima plant, Japan's news agencies say.

BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk...e-east-12307698

The VAGUE statements are not giving me a warm and fuzzy feeling...

  • NEWS ADVISORY: 130 Tokyo firefighters sent to Fukushima nuke plant (09:56) (Why now?)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: Water-dousing at nuke plant eyed for Fri. afternoon: Defense Ministry (09:54)
  • BREAKING NEWS: Radiation down consistently at one point in Fukushima plant (09:53) (at what point? Is it not consistent now? Why?)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: Cooling down Fukushima reactors to take several weeks: U.S. regulator (09:51) (no s**t...)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: Electricity restoration for No. 3, No.4 reactors eyed for Sun.: nuke agency (09:44)

I've come to the conclusion Phin may be right about not releasing bad news to avoid the market impact. And believe they are trying to manage a lot of political embarrassment.

They seem to have decided to only release positive leaning "news" or as my Lawyer Ex would say "make the truth work FOR you, by using half statements. Most people are too stupid to catch what wasn't said."

Edit: 4 minutes later....

The newest "News Advisory":

  • NEWS ADVISORY: PM Kan expresses appreciation for G-7 intervention: Noda (10:38)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: Noda declines to comment on target level of yen (10:37)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: No opposition from G-7 peers to concerted intervention: Noda (10:35)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: G-7 expresses support for Japan economy: Noda (10:35)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: G-7 shares view that yen's move volatile (10:34)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: Japan to continue efforts to prevent market volatility: Noda (10:33)

By the look of this..Its safe to assume that electrical systems within this structure are FUBAR.

Nahhh, man. They're just going to run a wire in there and flip the circuit breakers and fresh bottled water will magically solve everything. Comes with Cable TV.

Edano on now... this should be good.

Of coarse, that will solve it. There going to connect the power to and outlet and then they will press cooling systems for all reactors [on] and the problem will be gone in seconds.

Radiation down consistently at one point in Fukushima plant

TOKYO, March 18, Kyodo

Radiation readings at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have consistently followed a downward path through Friday morning, according to Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency measurements taken roughly 1 kilometer west of the plant's No. 2 reactor.

The agency also said Friday the radiation reading at 5 a.m. Friday came to 279.4 microsievert per hour, compared with 292.2 microsievert per hour at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, shortly after the Self-Defense Forces discharged water from fire trucks in an attempt to cool an apparently overheating spent fuel pool.

The spent fuel pools at the power station lost their cooling function after the quake and tsunami struck last Friday. It is also no longer possible to monitor the water level and temperature of the pools of the No. 1 to 4 units.

The buildings housing the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 reactors have been severely damaged by apparent hydrogen blasts, and the No. 2 reactor's containment vessel suffered damage to its pressure-suppression chamber at the bottom.

Radiation slightly down around reactor

Same article as above, with different headline implication (around REACTOR)

I still think we are in a great unknown. They report radiation levels are down, they may be, but it could be anything from the wind to the fire trucks spraying water. The scientist in me wants all the measurements in the same places. I also want weather conditions at that time of the measurement....I want to compare apples with apples.

I get really confused after Edano news conferences.

Gee, why would that be? ;)

At least the comments here not only make sense, but are quite often humorous as well.

  • NEWS ADVISORY: Temperatures at No. 5, 6 reactors up, pose no immediate danger: Edano (11:15)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: No. 3 reactor must be most focused: Edano (11:14)

NEWS ADVISORY: Fukushima's radiation levels posing no immediate health risks: Edano (11:10)

  • NEWS ADVISORY: Cooling efforts at No. 1 reactor also eyed: Edano (11:09)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: No. 3, No. 4 reactors are more urgent than No. 1 reactor: Edano (11:08)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: Tokyo fire trucks to spray water onto No. 1 reactor: Edano (11:07)
  • NEWS ADVISORY: Fri. morning's work at plant focused on restoring power: Edano (11:06)

Radiation may be low in some places since the wind is blowing offshore. How about an honest reading near the plants.

We know radiation at the plant is high enough to keep workers away except for the shortest of durations. Their actions give better information than their press conferences.
