0242 : Asked why the US has told its citizens to observe a much wider exclusion zone around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant than has Japan, Mr Edano says: "An outside government is not in direct control of the facility so it is understood that the US government has taken a more conservative approach."

"direct control of the facility" is definitely news to me.

Also, 30 minutes is a long phone conversation for 2 world leaders. I'm thinking a lot more happened in that call than what was reported.

They just mean the US doesn't have command and control on the ground. Also, the 30 minute call was a formality. Various staffers on both sides worked out the details.

Kyodo is reporting only that the minister said 4.13 millisieverts above the plant. For those who were listening, I could have sworn he said 4.13 millisieverts at 1000m and 87.7 at 300m. The 87.7 seems to match much better with the decision to only allow them to operate for 40 minutes.

I Pray this is at some point going to be brought under control and end. My gut says most likely not. Its tragic. the hostility here dont help. Lets Pray any kind of pumping operation can do something to at least stabilize it from escalating

Thanks for the update from your gut!

Reuters:US government authorises voluntary departure of family members of embassy staff

U.S. State Department says bringing in chartered aircraft to Tokyo to help Americans exit Japan

Ummmmmm, I'm pretty sure the situation is fairly dire if the embassy is chartering planes to get Americans out of Japan. If we're getting our citizens out and the Europeans are too, it may be time to pay more attention to what the US is saying about the situation than Japan, but the Japanese government's hesitance to act/spread "dire" news is most certainly understandable given their endorsement of Jaczko's statements could possibly cause mass panic etc.
