Japan Nuclear Crisis Part II

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I am a real jerk for interrupting the conspiracy theories about the Japanese government lying to the world.

People should read the thread before they post news flashes. We discussed how they moved the monitoring up wind etc. But the fact that this news is from the power company in light of our NRC director saying above reactor 4 is lethal has to be really construed as an attempt to put a good light on an absolutely OC situation. No GOVT lying but corporate manipulation maybe, and this would surprise you?

there is a real disconnect between the US and Japanese officials at this time. It's a little weird.

I think it's perceived as bigger in public than private at the least. One of the TMI workers said the statements coming from Japan are more or less in line with ours. There may be some truth to the cultural differences but little doubt they are talking/sharing/etc behind closed doors. Pride (good and bad) won't let them see a nuclear superstorm come to pass without doing their best to stop it.

Some of you have invested days on this topic, this thread, I know we all are pulling for the most likely outcome, the loss of a power plant, contaminiation in soil and ground water adjacent to the site. Beyond that its really grasping for straws and starting to get a little creepy.

Meanwhile the death toll continues to rise and the story continues to play out in regards to the true crisis in Japan right now, scare tactics have sold a lot of advertising space lately though, I will give them that.

Yeah, I saw the same interview. They did report the water as dangerously low in the report yesterday...but the PM spokesperson wouldn't address the NRC comments in front of congress today...he seemed to be doing a little PR/two-step.

WTF are you talking about, it is the number one news story on every media outlet in the world including Japan. You are accusing us of wishing for catastrophe, fookin BS. We are discussing what is going on and providing quick info to our group. Go back to talking about sunshine and spring, sorry for the attitude but you offended a lot of people.

That seems a little different than assuming there is active trickery in measurements and that you no longer trust any news coming out of Japan.

You don't think it a little disingenuous for them to trumpet lower radiation readings even though the before-and-afters aren't coming from the same location? That doesn't bring just a teensy bit of skepticism, or at the very least a desire for measurements with the same environment around them?

Not saying the numbers are wrong, just that it does seem worth raising an eyebrow at.

Are you going to start this junk tonight too? No one cares and it becomes annoying when one person constantly believes they are better than someone else. Don't come into the thread if you don't want to discuss the topic. Simple as that!!!

They know the world is watching. There is no reason to actively hide anything. Are they are going overboard with PR spin? Sure, possibly. The oft-quoted "disconnects" seem to be more in the realm of hyperbole and mitigation strategies than cold-hard-facts right now. Are US officials taking their own measurements and publicly disagreeing?

If not for Jaczko, we would be at the mercy of Anderson Cooper and the Tokyo Electric company to give us updates.

Six days into this here is where we are:

Spent fuel rods in Unit 4 of Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have been exposed, resulting in the emission of "extremely high" levels of radiation, the head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday. "What we believe at this time is that there has been a hydrogen explosion in this unit due to an uncovering of the fuel in the fuel pool," Gregory Jaczko

This may as well be occurring in Nigeria for all of the pathetic response.

Eleven people died in the BP explosion. Quite a few more are going to rot from cancer as a result of this.

It seems they are extra averse to making public comments that could cause panic. Given the situation following the earthquake that's perhaps more understandable than normal. They are already teetering along even if not for this. Based on how much we are involved in the process I do believe that the Japanese gov is fully aware of the situation and I am skeptical that the power company is calling all the shots. We heard this same kind of stuff with the oil leak.

I havent followed the radiation obs but I'd be leery of reading too much into it with strong offshore winds currently over the area.

I've been watching the news networks and they are driving me nuts. Talking to various "experts" about what would happen if this, that or the other happened and it's always the worst case scenario. However, in reality, unless you're working at the facility right now, you don't actually know what's happening. I know that's how the news works to get your attention but I had to turn the tv off because it's all speculation anyway.

Of course they are, by drone. Perhaps also by satellite.

No wonder the US is advising a much larger evacuation zone and the United Kingdom

even more so.

The Japanese are posting that radiation levels are dropping at the same time our guy

is saying rods are exposed and spewing dangerous radiation. As of 4:25 pm, our government

broke ranks with the Japanese mouthpieces.

Sanjay Gupta's dosimeter is reading 300% higher in Tokyo today than it was two days ago.

Good post. It's important to also keep in mind that there are powerful special interests that would love to destroy the nuclear power industry. Plus the media knows what sells -- if they just reported the news, there wouldn't be any viewers. They need to sensationalize everything.

I saw an interesting post on WattsUpWithThat blog (normally everything there should is crap), but this was a decent post. We've heard so much in recent days about TMI and Chernobyl, but it really put things in perspective, pointing out that the death toll was 0 from TMI and 56 from Chernobyl. 11 people died last year from a rig explosion alone. How many miners have died through the years? Coal and oil are the real killers, not even considering their environmental impacts -- which are horrendous. So far, nobody has died from this. 10,000+ have perished from a devastating earthquake and ensuing tsunami. This really needs to be put in perspective.

When a plane crashes, lots of people die. Should we get rid of the airline industry everytime a plane crashes? Of course, not. We should re-evaluate our safety standards and move on. Nuclear is just the boogeyman of the day.

The U.S. has a lot of stuff in place now. We are taking our own readings and posting our own advisories to U.S. citizens in the area. I have worked Katrina, Deepwater Horizon and a few other major's, our government is fairly transparent so let's sit back and see what the U.S. says. The problem here is that things are being controlled by a private Japanese entity. This is just my opinion!

11 watercannon trucks to spray reactor #3 after they finish with the helicopter drop which looks pretty ineffective.

They had a lead plate on the helicopter and the crew was completely suited up. Could only go down so far because of the amount of radiation. Was never going to work with the winds. Had to give it a shot I guess.

Not sure how close the pumper trucks can get.
