Sparky
keeps training over Washington, southern Frederick, southern Carroll, Howard counties. I still hear the rumbling of thunder ongoing even though I am north of the heavy stuff.

Avdave
I dont hear any thunder but wow the lightning to my east and north is Florida esque. Wicked cloud to ground lightning is amazing here 04/03/2011 0950 PM 2 miles E of Mount Pleasant, Frederick County. Hail e0.75 inch, reported by trained spotter. Nowcast as of 10:53 PM EDT on April 3, 2011 At 1047 PM EDT...Doppler radar detected a line of thunderstorms. These thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Wolfsville to Eldersburg...moving southeast near 50 mph. Locations that likely will be impacted include Garrison... Walkersville...Stevenson...Sparks...Phoenix...Ruxton...Roland Park... Riderwood and southern portions of the Baltimore Metro area. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring. Move indoors until the storms have passed. Brief gusty winds of 20 to 30 mph possible...heavy downpours could reduce visibilities and cause water to pond on roadways. Additional rainfall up to one-tenth inch can be expected.

vastateofmind
one of the stranger radars you see for a lightning event I was just thinking that, too, Ian -- what's up with that skinny, training band of t'storms? Have never seen anything like it on radar around here ever. Is there some sort of boundary or other phemomena at play in that area between DC and Balto? Almost forgot to add that the light show to the north is pretty vivid even down here in SE FfxCo at this late hour...
BethesdaWX
I'm just now seeing lightning to my NW as well as NE, developing western section of the line is firing off now Im so happy im in germantown

But all the activity tonight has had an odd appearance on radar given how much lightning it's producing it seems. All feathery and light looking. The echo tops are pretty high though -- 45-50k. It might be high based activity.. maybe why I can see vivid lightning here fro so far away. I have not been outside. I guess I should go look. Ian
really interesting to look at the different radar tilts from LWX right now. one of the weirdest things i've seen around here .. that long LES like line but bwi it looks like the ts bases are either 10 or 12k.. which is pretty hgh up there. high base t-storms are common in AZ -- i guess it's all elevated so maybe the warm front is still south of there a bit. It is great...beautiful, really. Always wanted to photograph spider lightning. Just seems odd, though, to step outside in such cool air with such clear skies overhead (here!) and see the kind of lightning (and hear/feel the kind of booming) that we don't usually get for another two months... Completely agree, reminds me of Miami somewhat. I'm not very comfortable walking outside tho! I guess you have more guts. It seems alot closer than it really is, but knowing that doesn't put me at ease.

stormitecture
effing BAD ASS CG lightning show. One of my most prolific CG photo sessions EVER. Woulda kept going by ran out of battery power (and batteries get expensive to get enough to last all day).
