a tornado warned supercell in western IN that has a strong mid-level mesocyclone 70-110kt of g2g shear from 7-10kft and a BWER. This thing is northwest of the sfc low with a NW sfc wind as its sitting under the cold pocket aloft associated with the strong ULL. Its also in an small area of higher 0-3km CAPE and very steep low-level lapse rates.

Nothing very impressive out of SW Ohio this afternoon. We got on the front-runner storm near Wilmington but couldn't keep up with it due to the crap road network (general rule of thumb: east of I-71 is basically pointless for chasing). I took a few good structure shots with my chase partner's camera and have a video of us sampling a nice hail core (somewhat on purpose whistle.gif) that I may post later if I get around to it.

HRRR was hinting at some cells so I guess this shouldn't have been that surprising, but I was still a little surprised.

We did have some structure damage in the area of where an unorganized rotation was showing on radar. I don't know anything more than it was out-building damage. Will probably hear a little bit more in the daylight. Also heard on the scanner during the storm that a citizen saw a tornado on the ground with debris in the air, but skywarn was unable to confirm it.

I can't remember seeing something like that before in that environment with strong nw winds and nw of the sfc low, it was a nice looking supercell for a few scans.

Yeah I probably would've done a quick chase if I hadn't turned my back on the setup. By the time I found out what was happening it was already too late.

Well, the first chase on the season is what I would consider a success and interesting...

I made it to my initial target of Creston, IA by mid-afternoon. As a supercell approached Nebraska City I decided to leave town and head west. This is where issues began with my GPS, live stream and internet coverage. I was able to find Route 34 and head west. I eventually made it to Route 71 where I sat for a bit as the supercell that was near Nebraska City finally approached. I spotted the initial wall cloud to my NW, which was be a few miles north of Stanton, IA. I then moved a bit north on Route 71 to get a better view on the storm. By this point the initial wall cloud had dissipated and the storm was moving overhead. At this point I was near Morton Milles, IA...I let the cell pass, sat and took pictures and then began playing the tail end cell from the main tornadic supercell. I then proceeded to head east on farm roads before stopping again for more pictures. At this point I saw some interesting looking cloud features/scud off to my NE. I was in a lower area so it was hard to see what it may be. After reviewing some pics/video and other chase reports it would appear that this is where the Massena tornado was and that if I had been on a hill I would have seen it. After seeing that the southern tail end cell wasn't doing anything I once again continued east to try and make a play on the supercell approaching Creston, IA. I was almost due north of the cell wen the first tornado was reported. I was never able to fully get ahead of it until it was weakening as it approached Osceola, IA. Going back and looking at pictures/video and chaser reports I once again realized that if I was on a hill looking to my SSE I would have been able to see that initial tornado. After making it to I-35 I found a hill near New Virginia, IA and watched as the line of severe storms associated with the cold front approached. This line featured a nice looking shelf cloud and the lightning was spectacular...probably within the top 3 lighning shows I have witnessed.

Even though I missed two tornadoes by a bit I was fairly happy with the chase given it was the first on the season and the technical issues I had.

Here are a few pics and video...
