Bear00001
PM of Japan comments: At plant #1 A 20 km area evacuation is set. Areas 20 km - 30 km should remain indoors (home/office) and avoid going outside. For Reactor #1 and #3 they had a hydrogen explosion He did not talk about reactor #2 instead referring to TEP. Fire in Reactor #4. The #2 plant they want everyone 10 km away from the plant. Act calmly. Minister speaking now. #4 reactor only has spent fuel. It was not operating. Trying to contain the fire. #2 reactor a whole was observed in the reactor. There is very little possibility that a hydrogen explosion would occur in reactor #2. Part of the suppression chamber seems to be responsible or the blast. Smoke seems to be coming from the #2 reactor... but they are not sure what the smoke/steam. 1, 2, 3 - water injection continues and seems to be going smoothly. Problem is maintaining the cooling over the longer term.
NJHurricane
Generic restating of evac zones, admits further radiation leaks possible...totally refused to address reactor 2 situation directly, minister Edano speaking now

NJHurricane
Edano: Reactor number 4....burning, is used as storage for spent fuel EDIT: several analysis past 24 hours have speculated there is perhaps more danger from spent fuel stored in the facility than from the active reactors themselves. daddylonglegs
I wonder what exactly is on fire in reactor 4...is it the fuel rods?
Clinch Leatherwood
Lol. I suspect the cameras being taken offline was not accidental. So now reactor 4 is burning. Basically folks remember even with three mile island we had no idea how bad it was for days/weeks
NJHurricane
Reactor #4 is on fire and is burning? what? apparently from overheating used fuel rods...the reactor itself was no longer active at time of quake, but used as storage...but perhaps similiar failures to maintain cooling process? NJHurricane
seems that while evac zone has not expanded...they are now urging people a further 10km outside the evac zone to stay indoors
NJHurricane
xyrconium fire. do you have a link to where it says that it is the fuel storage location? per ongoing press conference by cabinet minister speaking on NHK right now...also, it is not the sole fuel storage location....just that for some time it has been used for this purpose, as opposed to reactors 1-3 that were still active

Clinch Leatherwood
Cnbc Asia has had some good reporting. The micro to milli thing is big. Even with the location it's an astronomical jump. If my may is right the 400 milli equals about 400,000 micro.
JoMo
So they think the fire in #4 is contributing the the radiation more than #2? That must be some raging fire.
NJHurricane
Edano: there was not an immediate spike in radiation following #2 explosion....reason to believe that current cooling efforts are having some positive effect....spent fuel itself is not on fire in #
LovintheWhiteFluff
Where exactly is the radiation coming from if 1 and 3 are not causing it, they believe #2 isn't, and a fire at #4 isn't doing it?
Clinch Leatherwood
And there she goes, Nikkei PLUMMETING. Focus is on the 400 micro number I'm sure. The reading just reported jumped 50x higher than the last report at 830 leaving no question a colossal mess is underway.
