I mean they were forecasting about a 6 foot tsunami in Hawai'i, right? Seems pretty spot on.

Am I the only one just fascinated by the draw down in water level? Seeing that much exposed land off Waikiki is amazing. That is normally a pretty narrow beach, but 100 yards of exposed reef is incredible.

I was commenting on the same thing. It's amazing.

hose reports about the bodies are from the Sendai area which is the city closest to the epicenter where the waves were likely the highest. Unfortunately despite the fact the Japan has well a developed tsunami warning system, some people simply would not have the time or ability to evacuate fast enough, especially from a wave of that height (over 20' at minimum) we know travelled a good distance inland from the video we have seen.

All the debris reminds me a lot of the videos from Sri Lanka from 2004, where the height of the waves were likely similar.

No, it's interesting.

The guy they are talking to now on KGMB is saying that there might be "bizarre ocean behavior for hours" which is kind of cool.

Seeing the eb and flow of it is amazing. The 3rd time it receeded, and really went far out, was a little unsettling.

It's gonna be some radical, gnarly surf, dude! If the lessons of Indonesia are lost on some then I say you are on your own.

I had seen a study a while ago that found just over half of all fatalities from weather are due to people ignoring warnings, and most likely believing weather forecasts are always wrong.

They are really stressing now that it's not too bad.

Here is the initial USGS Shake Map for the quake. MM intensity of VII over a large area. Japan Shake Map

For comparison here is the map for the Chile earthquake last year. Chile Shake Map

Suggests the shaking from the Japan quake on land actually was slightly less the Chile quake, most likely due to the Chile quake being closer to shore. Some hope that the actual damage from the earthquake itself may not be that severe.
