9.0 Earthquake strikes Japan

Not so sure 10 or 20 miles would have been enough to just ride it out, i would have thought 40-60 miles out would be much safer as that tsunami was traveling at a high rate of speed it still could have brought those boats close enough to beach them at 10 to 20 miles, although i am not good at all these figures but still 10 to 20 seems way too close, you can see how tough it was for that crab boat leaving the harbor it has a big fight on its hands and it seemed that it had much more to fight through to get into a bit safer waters.

Do you have any expertise in tsunami physics or are you just making stuff up as you go along?

I think it would all depend on the ocean depth at a given location. If waters 10 miles off the coast were deep enough the tsunami would have very little amplitude and it may indeed be safe location.

Just saw this video. Amazing. Seems like it was taken from a rooftop? If so they are lucky the building stayed put.

(Sorry, there is a 20 second Comcast add at the beginning)

Ya, I think I just saw the same video here (without the ad)

I don't understand why every boat in the harbor didn't just leave, go 10-20 miles offshore, and just chill out for 6 hours; the tsunami time was forecast pretty precisely, and they would have had plenty of time to do so. Especially if your a commercial fisherman and your boat is your livelyhood. Maybe some boats did.

Indeed, some boats did get out ahead of the surge. Others stayed because the captains/crews were not in town to take action, or their boats were undergoing maintenance during the slow season; and still others were permanently docked live-on vessels not deemed seaworthy.

The world is not going to end. This planet has been here for a long long long time. How can it just end on one day out of a sudden doesn't make sense. The yellowstone volcano has erupted before like 250,000 thousands years ago and has no signs of just appearing in 2012. The solar activity is way lower than whatever that mess they predicted thats why they revised it like 5 times. And then somehow a planetX is supposed to appear and......I don't know then somehow a pole will reverse and a galatic alignment all on DEC21 2012. Thats stupid. Dumb

Death Star is being built on the other side of the Sun where we can't see it. Vader is just itching to blast George Lucas into oblivion for releasing episodes I-III

I know we ain't going anywhere. Well, maybe the human species will go buh-bye someday, but the planet will lurk on for 10 billion more years

A bit worrisome there are more and more aftershocks at the extreme southern end of the Rupture area (East of Tokyo) - per the USGS earthquake poster, there wasn't much slippage in the area in the mainshock, meaning that the megathrust didn't fully rupture.

If an earthquake like last week's hit downtown Tokyo...

Ground level, just watch the whole thing

Tsunami Footage

I want to show everyone the news media we are being presented with here in Japan. I think it's quite different from what you see on CNN and other Western news outlets. Due to the popularity of this video, I have started a new page to collect my personal experiences as well as release Japanese news reports about the Tsunami. Please like it to keep up to date! http://www.facebook.com/ThroughWesternEyes Note: This video was not shot by me. Although I am a cameraman, I live in Tokyo 180 miles from the disaster zone. I recorded this video from TV to pass on. It is copyrighted by Asahi TV and can't be posted on YouTube or other sites. I technically shouldn't be able to post it here, but I'll leave it up as long as I get away with it! Google streets view of where this video was shot: http://bit.ly/for0zS

Not good news.

http://www.smh.com.a...0313-1bt2p.html

NORTH-EASTERN Japan can expect another monster earthquake large enough to trigger a tsunami within days, the head of the Australian Seismological Centre says.

The director, Kevin McCue, said there had been more than 100 smaller quakes since Friday, but a larger aftershock was likely.

''Normally they happen within days,'' he said. ''The rule of thumb is that you would expect the main aftershock to be one magnitude smaller than the main shock, so you would be expecting a 7.9.

''That's a monster again in its own right that is capable of producing a tsunami and more damage.''

Last part of the video has a crab boat leaving DURING the tsunami - fortunately made it.

I hope they check the pilings on those bridges for scour - I wouldn't want to drive across them.

You might want to check your math. The boats, especially from Sendai on to the north, didn't have time to get 10-20 miles off shore. Remember, the tsunami wave translates at roughly 500 mph. The earthquake happened less than 100 miles from Sendai. That means any boats in that area MIGHT have had 12 minutes...if they were lucky and responded IMMEDIATELY...to get away from whereever they were at.

I am almost certain he was talking about the boats that stayed in the Crescent City harbor.

NHK world has some great ( but sad) stuff on right now.

Didn't catch the town name, but they had a 10 meter seawall they built at great expense after the 1933 Sanrikyu tsumami; this tsunami went over it and trashed the town as if it wasn't there.

That WAS Sanriku. They has also been hit by the Great Meji Tsunami of 1896 which had a height of 30m.

if you wanna know how great the alarm system is in Japan, take a look at this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmxb6hmydWs

the early warning system kicked in as soon as the earthquake was recorded; several prefectures were already placed under a tsunami alert, and after a minute or so, the you can see the actual shaking...

this is in the national assembly afaik... it's amazing how the reporter was able to stay calm even if his whole office is shaking already, although you can hear the "fear" in his voice in the latter part...

Old news.

And again, I wouldn't be completely shocked if it hit 100,000.

Nor I, in fact if one listens carefully to that report of 10000+, one will hear that it's Police Chief of Miyagi Prefecture saying that the death toll could top 10000 in his Prefecture ALONE.
