on_wx
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTwnxVIlWss Incredibly dramatic and full length footage of the tsunami that CNN keeps playing parts of. From about 5:00 into the video to the end at 15:00 just watch the roads, fields, and tops of buildings. People are everywhere in cars, running on foot, and on roof tops. They probably figured they were far enough inland. Just awful.

Animal
http://www.reuters.c...E72B04C20110312 Snap analysis: Japan may have hours to prevent nuclear meltdown I was just watching Racahel Maddow on CNBC . She had on an expert that basically called Japan a bunch of BS for not notifying people of the impending disaster. You could see fear in his eyes. aslkahuna
I think Sendai had about an hour warning before the tsunami hit so hopefully most people got out in time. Though in the video you can still see cars on the road and on one highway the traffic appeared to be backed up for miles. They might have been far enough inland though. The Japanese run annual Tsunami drills especially in the areas of Honshu where the really big ones have hit. Basically what you do in a case like this is when you feel the jolt you haul a** as far inland and as high up as you can get. You don't wait to see where the epicenter is because if you do and it's offshore it'll be too late. Sendai was 80 miles west of the epicenter-given a travel speed of 500 mph in open water they had well less than an hour to get inland-in fact 20 minutes or less. Derecho!
A PhD in what? In instances where agendas are involved, a PhD usually means Piled Hip Deep. Steve It was Edward Lyman, who indeed has a PhD in Physics from Cornell. However, The Union of Concerned Scientists is, essentially, an anti-nuclear advocacy group. They're more than happy to show up in the media to fuel speculative fear, I'm sure.

Southland Wx
FYI, regarding the nuke fears, a balanced commentary posted on the great running blog on the BBC: 0256: More on the nuclear fears: James Acton from the Carnegie Endowment tells the BBC that releasing vapour from the reactors shouldn't damage the environment 0258: Mr Acton adds: "If there is nothing worse than radioactive steam being released into the environment, then there's unlikely to be significant lasting damage to people outside of the plant. If the integrity of the core is lost and the core starts to melt, and much more radioactive steam is leaked out into the environment, then we could be in an extremely serious situation." http://www.bbc.co.uk...e-east-12307698 (weblink looks like they just converted coverage of the Middle East crisis to quake coverage)

jburns
I was wondering when this would begin. LA Times has an article about how the Japanese quake will cause oil prices to rise further. "It's a 'yikes' situation," said James DiGeorgia, editor of the Gold & Energy Advisor. "The sudden importation of large amounts of distilled products is expensive and it's a heavy logistics burden. That is going to drive up the market price for everything from diesel and gasoline to jet fuel." http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-japan-quake-oil-20110312,0,1526844.story?track=rss

One of the monitoring posts is also indicating higher than normal level. We will continue monitoring discharge of radioactive material from exhaust stack and discharge canal, etc. * Considering the increasing pressure with in the reactor containment vessel of Unit 1, the national government has instructed us to implement measures to reduce the pressure of the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station: Units 1 to 4: shutdown due to earthquake * The national government has instructed evacuation for those local residents within 3km radius of the periphery and indoor standby for those local residents between 3km and 10km radius of the periphery. *At present, we have decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. These measures are considered to be implemented in Units 1 to 4 and accordingly, we have reported and/or noticed the government agencies concerned.
