Scott747
Sounds like they may release a small amount of radioactive vapor to reduce the pressure on the plant in distress.

QVectorman
Just found this link on the cause of the whirlpools that developed after the tsunami. Amazing video and interesting phenomena. It seems they are documented throughout history and on satellite during the 2004 tsunami. http://www.livescience.com/13182-japan-tsunami-whirlpool.html

Derecho!
Aftershocks still occuring in the area like crazy - three so far this hour, seven last hour, five the hour before that. Actually surprised there haven't been larger ones... Ballpark-SWAG is that the largest aftershock is usually about 1.5M less than the mainshock; So one would expect at least one 7.4-7.5M at some point. One thing that is worrisome is potential triggered stress now on faults in Honshu; COULD generate a large quake under, say, Tokyo in the next 5 minutes or the next 5 months. dan11295
Probably not going to get that much more info for a few more hours, when daylight comes to Japan, and more damage assessment can occur.
kwt
Sounds like they may release a small amount of radioactive vapor to reduce the pressure on the plant in distress. Hmmm, I guess thats just to prevent something really disasterous, but is doing that going to have any effect or is it so minimal to have no effect on anything? Yeah, there was a 7.1 which occured shortly after the inital quake. Most are 5's with a few 6's. The last 6 occured three hours ago. The last few have been 5.9, 5.7 and 4.7 (in the last hour alone). link to a map of the area http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Maps/10/145_35.php list of all the quakes on that map http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Maps/10/145_35_eqs.php

jacindc
http://www.bbc.co.uk...acific-12717863 Hopefully since that person had gotten up on the hill, most of the area had gotten the word to evacuate as well. Hopefully. That's unreal. This also might be a good time to remind people about that big-ass Cascadian Subduction Zone off the Oregon coast. In case anyone thinks tsunamis only hit the west coast after traveling thousands of miles.
